Whidbey NAS information

Posted on March 8, 2010 at 11:47pm 1 Comment

My daughter just eloped, and her husbands orders are to Whidbey WA. We live in Florida. Can someone tell me what Whidbey is like, and how I can help them (and us) both with this transition. I have never blogged before, and am very nervous about doing everything correctly.

The base offers a small movie theatre with first run movies, paint ball field, small skate park, batting cages, bowling alley, auto mechanic shop, good sized gym, RV park and campground and liberty center. The liberty center shares the space of the galley. It offers computers, Xbox, pool tables, rooms for music, and is the place to sign up for tours and activities.

Tours and activities range from sea kayaking to snow skiing to video game conventions to mariner games... you name it! Sailors can buy discounted tickets to a real range of activities through the liberty MWF center.

Whidbey is in what they call a rain shadow, means they don't get as much rain as other parts of the state. It can be really windy up there though... no matter the season. In Washington we know how to work and play in the rain!

Summer is the best! Warm days, cool nights and lots of beach to walk and explore. Fort Casey and Fort Ebey (WWII era) are fun to explore, with small campgrounds, beaches to explore, old battlements to wander through, big fields to fly kites, trails to hike or ride bikes, a lighthouse to visit and more. There are tons of trails to hike and bike. And most guys on the base have a favorite lake to swim or fish.

The Island has that rural small town atmosphere... great to visit. Lots of bed and breakfast places, small wineries and touristy things like that. Some can feel isolated and look forward to a trip to Seattle or to Burlington (closest mall and movie theatre). Island life can be pretty quiet for a young sailor.

A couple of ways to get off the island... To drive off the island you head to the north and across the Deception Pass Bridge. Then head east to I-5. From there you head south to Seattle or North to Canada. Or if headed to Seattle you head south to the far end of the island and catch the Washington State Ferry.
