Your recruiter is correct in telling you to get second opinion.

Going to pull rank here on some of the medical questions and concerns.  Hubby is physician and I was a trauma center lab tech for  ten years.  Most vaccines now are not live viruses.  I did have one once when I started work in the hospital and ended up with the measles.  Most vaccines today however are not live, which means you are exposed to the illness in a non-live form that is designed to cause a immune response in your body.  As we can all remember from the baby shots this can cause flu like symptoms and fever.  The same can happen in adults.  So even though your SR is not getting the illness he can be having a heightened immune response which can lower his resistance and cause him to catch something he is not being protected from (common colds, bacterial infections, etc.) which is why they give them vitamins and an immunoglobulin shot to try and counter other infections.  Unfortunately, with them being in such close quarters, being run down physically, being stressed, and being immuno compromised due to the shots they are at risk for catching something and most do get at the very least a cold.  The navy doctors do a great job of taking care of them so try not to worry.

Also, in regard to the SR who was sent home for asthma.  Did he have a history of asthma before BC?  If not then my husband said you should definetly get a second opinion from a pulmonologist.  If it is just excerised induced that it is easlily treated and in regard to what I mentioned above about shots etc. at BC it could have caused him to appear that it was more serous than it really is.  In addition, if it is execised induced he could pick a navy job that is less phyiscal in nature.  My son is in CTI which is pretty much a desk job.

Please feel free to email or friend me if you need any additional information.  Tell your son I am rooting for him!
