Being apart of the Cardinal Company has it's perks....We took Chas to St. Louis on Monday but he got to keep his phone until he arrives at GL on Thursday and I was able to visit him last night.
Monday night, Chas was very somber...He said his stomach hurt...didn't really eat and as Mom, I knew it was a rough time for him. Change is rough on us all.
So fast forward to Tuesday night....I drive into the parking lot of the hotel and there is all the boys standing around talking to some gentleman. Chas makes his way over and I ask what is going on...he said they were going to shave their heads now. He was bubbly and talking a mile a minute....he was my old Chas. He was excited, meet some new friends....oh it was so good to see.
He ended up jumping into the car with me and we sat there and talked....a nice talk! It was so good to have "Chas" with me. The dreaded "I better get back, Mom" came and he got out of the car and came to my window. I immediately jumped out because right now those hugs are better than a winning lottery ticket.
We hugged...I grabbed his face with both hands, peered into those eyes that are just like mine and said I love you and I'm so proud of you. I wanted to make sure he heard me....it's important he knows that and he hugged me.
In a small voice he said You're proud now that I'm not homesick? Oh man, my heart sank, I knew that is what it was on Monday but he won't say it. I grabbed his face and I said I'm proud of you no matter what....I proud of what you are going to do...and I'm proud of who you are....I'm proud that you are my son. To make a joke of the matter, I said I need you a little homesick so you will write me.....we laughed.
A couple more hugs, couple more kisses, couple more words and my son "bustled" back over to his new friends. It was still hard to leave him but I left with a smile.
I miss him already but I still have tomorrow.
Please help me. My brother is part of the Cardinal Company and he also leaves tomorrow. I am trying to find the information out about the BBQ before the game.
Tomorrow...9:30 am on the steps of Soldier's Memorial (1315 Chestnut St) they will give their Oath of Enlistment. There will be a BBQ after that. At 11, the Company will march to Busch Stadium to take their final oath. You can buy tickets for the Cardinal game at www.stlcardinals.com/navy $5 (plus handling fee) . If you would like to eat at BBQ, call soon for count at 314.331.5084.
I hope that helps....the company will be leaving in the 7th inning to board a bus to GL.
