Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.
DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

Waits of 6 to 9 months can be typical. Up to a year is possible. It all depends on the needs of the Navy, what rating he is choosing and his availability.
He can back out up to the morning he is to ship for root camp. There is a contract and a swearing into the Delayed Entry Program, but none of it is carved in stone. Kids change there minds all the time. This may offer the kids waiting an opportunity to jump to the head of the line. Think flexible.
