My son's been in bootcamp 2 weeks now...I was wondering if I can send him a care package and what can I put in it. I know no candy allowed, but what else?

Also, no one indicated that anyone other than the recipient opens the package. It would be a federal offense for anyone other than the person the package is addressed to to open the package, but since packages sometimes contain items that are not permitted onboard the RTC, the recruit must open the package in front of his/her RDC.

When my son was in BC the mother of another recruit sent her son a package of boxers because he had told her he didn't like the tighty whities he was issued.

The box was opened in front of an RDC and the "underwear" was displayed. The recruit that received them had to stand at attention looking at the boxers and say "I love my Navy issued underwear" 50 times, while the rest of the division said it with him and did one push up every time it was said. The recruit for the rest of BC acquired the nickname "Boxer". :)

so yes it happens!  and no, don't take a chance!  wait til his out of BC to spoil him rotten! :)

best thing to do is wait and ask your recruit what he can and cant have get it from the horse's mouth. I know they cant have care packages. so listen to your recruit first.

join the navy for moms group, there is a wealth of information there,  if you search the groups, there should be a PIR group with his pir date you can join.   that has the most information of do's & dont's...

LauriB, josephine has joined Boot Camp Moms (and loved ones) (I suspect that is the group you meant) and her PIR group. She needs to become familiar with the info in the Pages (found under the pictures of the members) in both of groups, but she can always ask questions.

If cookies are sent he will either have to eat them in front of everyone, or the command will eat them and he will get in trouble. They are not allowed care packages until PIR. Only letters and pictures.
