My daughter graduates HS in June and her Boot Camp date is not until November 2nd. She wants to leave sooner but doesn't want to miss the summer at home. Also what would she do September and October is my concern. She has a part time job but no car. Should I let her decide or just change the date and hope it is not until August or September?
She has a ship date currently and that is her ship date unless something opens up. She will let her recruiter know that she is interested in an earlier ship date and the recruiter will file a DEP Action Request (DAR) indicating that she wants an earlier ship date. The recruiter will call her if an earlier date opens up, which means that someone with a contract with the same rating (job) that she has or another rating that she is eligible for (if that is part of the DAR) is unable to ship for some reason. She would then have the opportunity to accept or reject the new contract and ship date. Not every future Sailor who wants an earlier ship date gets one, but some do and some are offered two or more new dates. It all depends on the future Sailor's contract and what becomes available. Sometime the date offered is a month or so off and other times, it is within the week of the offer.
I left info for you on your My Page.
Waytogo - my son had the same time line of graduation in June and ship date in November. He liked having the summer to spend time with family and friends. He had a parttime job and worked up to a week or so before shipping out. It also gave him plenty of time to go to the gym and workout. He was physically and mentally prepared when he left. So having several months to wait is not a bad thing and it gives mom more time to be prepared as well.
Waytogo, Join PIR January 2017. I left additional info on your My Page.
