Hello,

My son is in the dep program and he doesn't leave for basic training until July 30 2013. I'm looking for gift ideas that he would need after basic. I don't want to buy him"stuff" that he's not going to use. Can anyone help me out? Is an iPad or iPod a good or terrible idea?

Thanks!!

@bell2039... I have a question on the iPad... if you don't mind me asking that is. Is it Wifi only or Wifi+3g/4g? I think I read somewhere that the sailors have to pay for wifi. I was thinking of getting my daughter an iPad to use after BC but I'm not sure which type would be best for her situation.

kinda putting the cart before the horse. Wouldn't your son know the things he likes laptop, watch, new street clothes once he can have them, plane ticket home after A school.PIR trip costs too you may want to save for that hotels and plane tickets costs.

True AbbyBlue. Those are things to think about. Since I posted I thought about it some more and decided to wait until my daughter actually gets to where she'll be for a while and then she can see what works best for her. She already has Skype on her phone since our family is stretched from one side of the country to the other and she's lived both with me in the middle of the country and her father on the west side. Unlike some here she's not leaving from her parents house to the Navy. She's been on her own for a few months now. (But as soon as she said she was joining...I reverted to her being the baby again lol)

My youngest daughter is in boot camp now. My oldest daughter is a Marine. Things she and her brothers like/needed;    lap top, xbox, tv, even things like real nice twin xl sheets, bath towels, gift cards to movie theater by base, even a gift card to the px is great. I would wait on a new phone until he is at his 1st post, all depends on where he is for who he uses for a carrier. My daughter had to cange from Verizon to ATT for coverage in Calf. Just some ideas.
