For the privacy and safety of you and/or your sailor, NO LAST NAMES ARE ALLOWED, even if your last name differs from that of your sailor (please make sure your URL address does not include your last name either). Also, please do not include your email address in your user name. Go to "Settings" above to set your Username. While there, complete your Profile so you can post and share photos and videos of your Sailor and share stories with other moms!

Join groups! Browse for groups for your PIR date, your sailor's occupational specialty, "A" school, assigned ship, homeport city, your own city or state, and a myriad of other interests. Jump in and introduce yourself! Start making friends that can last a lifetime.

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.
DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

Commission on USS Constitution
My son is at boot right now and graduates on oct. 24th. He called to let us know that he has accepted a 2 yr. commission on the USS Constitution in Boston. We are really excited for him ,but would like some input from other mom's whos child has gone to "old Ironsides". Any information would really be helpful!

Your Sailor's experience with Old Ironsides is going to be different from that of most other Saiilors. Early in 2015 USS Constitution will be moving into drydock for a 3 year overhaul.

Thanks. Our son told us that too, but I am wondering if it is even worth the commission. (not making light of it) but if the ship will be out of the water for 3 yrs. what will he be doing?

If not actually helping with repairs, there is still a need for watch standing and safety... but quite often they are sent to extensive C schools related to their rating. Some are assigned temporary duty stints to other commands in the area, sometimes within their rate, sometimes as auxiliary duty (base security comes to mind). I imagine he will take a lot of history lessons associated with the ship and the War of 1812 (hey, I have ancestors which were in that war...)
It will be interesting to learn if my guesses are accurate or not! Keep us posted!

Reading this, if your son is undesignated (PACT), he will stand a better chance of getting an A school that he wants. That might make it worthwhile.
"Members who did not enlist for a guaranteed program may request any program for which they qualify within 9 months prior to the end of their tour. Requests can be expected to receive a favorable consideration if the member is otherwise eligible and a requirement exists."

Thanks for all the help! He wanted to go in as a diver and passed all the requirements way high, but just didn't get chosen from the pool. I think this is a really good thing for him to do instead. He loves history and has a personality that should work well. He didn't volunteer. THey asked if he would like to do this, so I am taking that as a good sign.
