My son is leaving on March 26, 2012 to boot camp, can anyone fill me in on what to expect? I am so proud for him but also scared and not knowing is the worst part. I have read only 4 non-military can attend the graduation but can more than 4 stay at the Navy Lodge and have access to the base to visit?
Thank you ladies for the information.
It is true that your recruit can get only four reservations for the graduation ceremony. Also, will have to know the name of those four people ahead of time so that they are on the 'list.' Those four people will be required to present ID before they can be allowed in. Security is TIGHT. You can bring more people with you and if there are empty seats after everyone is seated, stand-bys will be allowed in. As far as Navy Lodge is concerned, you can reserve as many rooms as you want. So if friends and family can't attend the ceremony, they can at least spend some time with the 'graduate.' Oh, and here is something I found out the hard way. If you buy airline tickets and then the grauduation date changes for some reason, airline insurance will NOT take care of the change because PCS orders or an emergency are not involved. Your recruiter may tell you different; but I know from experience. So I would wait until the last two weeks. Hope this has been helpful.
My son just flew to Great Lakes yesterday. He called his father around 12:30 AM and still had several more hours of processing. He sounded exhausted. When I first found out his shipping date a month ago, I cried and cried. After a day or so, life returned to normal. However, the last few days, including today have been very emotional and I cannot focus on anything. I know my son will do well but I'm a single mom and really miss his company. He is S-Pact so will likely be stationed to a base right out of basic. He wants Japan, I want Norfolk since it's only 1 1/2 drive from my home. And, I didn't know that parents were allowed to go to MEPS on the day they ship out for their second swearing in. My son didn't communicate that information to us. :( Best of luck. It's hard. I think it's different than a child going off to college because with college, you can go see them anytime you want and can have regular telephonic and computer communication.
