My daughter leaves for boot camp next week. We are trying to get all of her paperwork in order. Could someone please tell me the correct direct deposit form she will need? I have been searching online and have gotten several different forms. Standard Form 1199A and one that says FASTSTART on the top for federal employees net salary form. We are going with a local bank close to home to start with and figured if later on in her military career she wanted to go with the military bank she would change over to that. I just want to make sure she has the correct form completed when she gets to boot camp. Thanks....

They have classes for their personal finances in BC. They are offered a chance to open a Navy Federal Credit Union (NFCU) account. If you decide to continue to use your own the DD Form is 1999A.

This is a great post to read:

I know it says a "month" but it will still be helpful :-D

Survival Guide for Navy For Moms Newbies

All she has to do is take her deposit slips and account info with her, the Navy sits them down during in processing and walks them through the forms.  They do thousands of these, it really is not something which needs to be done ahead of time.  She just needs to bring all the hometown information.

NFCU is not  a "military" bank.  It is a credit union which is open to service members, their family and DoD civilians. The problem she will run into with a hometown bank is fees (NFCU has none), ATM fees, and if she has any problems, can she get them easily resolved while she's away?

When I joined, I went with a local bank.  They kept cancelling my credit card because I had an out of state address and changed it too often!!!    I had so many problems I switched to NFCU.  Still with them for our retired Navy pay (husband too).   Of course, there was no online banking then, that should help.  But seriously, long distance banking can be a real hassle.

If she plans to use an existing account, she needs to take a blank check, which she will VOID (a deposit slip does not work), or form 1199A completed by her financial institution (they have the form).  I recommend that she open an account with NFCU.

Thanks FTLW for recommending that discussion.

Jem, you do have time to get everything done on my list; it is just a bit less stressful if spread out over a month rather than a week.

Will I have full access to the account if she opens at the navy bank? I am taking care of all her bills while she is gone so I will need to know how much $ and when it is deposited. Will I be able to write checks off the navy account? I am afraid that if she opens a navy account then I will not be able to help with check writing etc. She has several bills that must be paid promplty or else....thanks

She can put you on, but I'm not certain if she can do that while opening the account.  I'd assume so if she has your personal info (birthdate, SSN).  Married sailor put their spouses on, should be the same to add you as a joint owner.  You'd want to be a joint owner, not just an authorized user.  But if she takes her own bank information, it will be no problem.

Her leave and earning statement will be posted online.  Supposedly, no one but the sailor is supposed to access it, so you and she need ot work that out in private.

Be aware that first paycheck is very, very small, all her needs such as toiletries, running shoes, and underthings come out of it.  You won't see a full paycheck for at least one month if not a month and a half.  I hope she set some money aside for bills before she leaves, as that first check is short.  If that is not an option, contact her creditors and see if they will put a hold on the bills until her pay stabilizes.  Many will happily do so for military members.
