Can anyone help me. I have a son who has passed the physical, taken the ASVAB - qualified for a job that is not available at this present time. So he asked the recruiter to get the papers ready to sign up for the DEP. The recruiter told him there is no such paper work, that they would call him when his job is available. Everything I have read on lines suggest a DEP contract up to 365 days. Please can anyone shed some light on this subject.

Thank you

Kbondy

kbondy - my son was in the Delayed Entry Program and did sign a contract. It did not guarantee him of a specific job. He attended weekly PT with the other local DEP recruits and monthly meetings where they helped them with getting in shape and learning things about their branches of service. It was a big help but gave them no guarantee's. He was not actually sworn in until his wait period was up for a job that he was qualified for, which was about 9 months. There is no pay or benefits at this point. Hope this helped.

Thank you so much for both of your comments. This is what I thought. I will look into this further.

My son was in DEP for one year....his first visit to MEPS, 6/08, he signed a contract...that contract guaranteed him a job and an A-school position and said when he would leave for bootcamp.....he left for bootcamp 6/09. No pay and no benefits during DEP time, he attended weekly DEP meetings, twice weekly PT times, and met weekly with recruiter.

Tyler was also sworn in 6/08 on his first visit to MEPS.

Well I found out something new today, Speaking to the supervisor at the Recruitment office, Since my son is no longer a highschool student he doesn't qualify for the DEP. His Graduation was June 5th. Even though we have been working on this process much before his graduation date. such as the prep work ASVABS, Physical at the MEPS center, back ground check etc. The supervisor said my sone would most likely be called up in about 6 month and that indeed he is on their call list. 6 months is really not that long. But for a young man ready and willing to go I guess it is.

I don't know if this will help you Kbondy but keep on that recruiter and keep asking about MEPS. The first time my son went to meps he scored very high on absvam and all those other tests passed the physical and whatever other tests he was given and then put on the QNJ list which is the Qualified No Job Available. He had one year of college under his belt. The recruiter introduced him to other recruits who were also waiting and working out together and M started running and swimming and doing that stuff as well as learning the creed and general orders etc. Two weeks later the recruiter calls and says news jobs are coming out so go back to MEPS this week and see what the job guy can do for you and M came home with an AE contract which is Aviation Electronics and now is suddenly going to BC 1st of September. I forget how often M said the recruiter said jobs come out. There is a shortage of jobs due to economy etc. and some people in the DEPPERS group here, which refers to all the people waiting to go in, have waited over a year. So I would say squeaky wheel gets the oil, I don't remember if jobs come out monthly or quarterly. Now this is how I understand it and I am pretty new, so if a more seasoned person tells you different believe them....lol

Lynne,
Thanks so much for sharing. I will try to get a hold of the recruiter and ask about the other recruites who are on the wait list. Timothy (my son) has chose his fields of interest at the MEPS. He is interested in the Sea Bee's Not sure how often this job comes out, my husband and I sfigure when ever the school's graduate a class they put out a list at the MEPS for more jobs, With Timothy's job, he is required to enlist for 5 years because the schooling for the job is longer. Timothy is a little down right now but getting a hold of the other waiting recruites might help his spirits.

Yes, my son was not in High School either. He has a Bachelors Degree and is 23. That had nothing to do with the DEP Program here in NY. He is done with Boot Camp and is in submarine school (BESS), but as of last week still hadn't locked into a specific specialty job.

He should get a copy of the Blue Angels Jacket (I think that's the name of it) It is a book that has everything in it that he has to learn (memorize) and all the navy history. It also has all the requirements he will have to meet at bootcamp. That way at least he can get started and prepare for BC. It will make boot camp a lot easier for him.
