OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

There's truly nothing like getting an email from your sailor! I was in the middle of writing him one, and I got one! He is so sweet. He never really mentions anything of what is going on (he most likely cant anyways) but he always is reassuring that he's doing okay and he misses me and loves me. On Valentine's Day, I gave him a journal and showed him mine as well (they were matching in his favorite color-teal) and so I told him that we could write in them if our communication was limited during deployments. Whenever he wanted to tell me something, he could write it down and we could go through them later when we're together. So in this most recent email, he told me that he's tried to write in it every night. At first he didn't think he'd have time, but it's so sweet to know that he's trying to do this, not just for me or him, but for US. I'm so thankful that we have emails! It's his first deployment, so neither of us knew how things would work out. I'm really glad for this online community as well, because it helps so much when I have questions, or just need to know that there are others out there that are dealing with the same thing I am. My parents aren't familiar with having people they know in the military (at least in this generation, as both my grandfathers were in the army), so it's hard to talk to them about it. Thank you to all of you who are willing, like me, to support our sailors and wait for them patiently at home. :)

I'm glad you've found the site. I see you joined the group for his ship; what is his rating (job/specialty)? There may also be a group for that.

Comment by karinabeana611 on April 21, 2013 at 10:47pm
His rank is MM3 (He's a petty officer 3rd class) and he's a Torpedoman. However, it's his first deployment so he's mainly focused on getting his dolphins. :) (that's his main porpoise!)

You may wish to join the group, Machinest Mates. LOL on the porpoise.

I thought a Torpedoman was a GM; so I learned something.
