Full Time Support > choosing A-School/Duty Station out of boot camp??????

My son signed into the FTS program because "active duty" jobs were not available at the time. He spent almost 2 years getting weight off and med waivers to be accepted, and was just tired of waiting. He wanted in and wanted in now. He left for boot camp Thursday July 7th.I was wondering if he'll be able to request/choose an A-school in boot camp, then a duty station after he is through. We are still learning about FTS program, though we support him 100% even though he's not "active". We've asked his recruiter/chief about FTS and they couldn't really give us any information. So any you may have will be so helpful. I've heard benefits are similiar, the only thing I am worried about is being put in an A-school/duty station on the west coast, we live in NC, and would love for him to be in the Norfolk area, maybe at Oceana. He's AV > Avionics Technician. Thanks! GO NAVY!!!!

The FTS program he's in is Full Time Support, another name for reserve, but it's not weekends only, it's full time just like active, we're still learning all the in's and out's of this program, but he was offered to go in at MEPS, a few months ago when he went to choose his job. He has no prior experience, I guess it's another division of reserve, from my understanding, ( of what I've read ) FTS, train the reserves so they can do their weekend and once a month duties????

Thank you Lisa! I appreciate your help with trying to sort this all out! I just want to make sure he has all the opportunities everyone else does!  So was wondering what 3 duty stations they have to choose from? Or will he have different ones to choose from then your son did?  My son is hoping to go to one of the bases in Norfolk, we are in NC and I know he wants to try and stay close to home if he can. As I gather more info, I feel better about the FTS program and he being a part of it, what you don't know, can worry you sometimes. Thank you again, what do you think his chances are getting into VA??

Thank you again for all your info, I so very much appreciate it. It's been a lil tough for me, being Vince is my only child. I want to be sure we feel good about his choices as well as he does, I know in the end it isn't about what we think or how we feel, it is ultimately up to them and I know that I just have to have the confidence that he will make the right decisions for himself, after all, he did sign, and that was a great decision. Talking with someone who's been in the program and knows what to expect, helps. I was a Navy wife a long time ago, my husband got out in '93, so I should know that with the Navy, nothing is ever certain..lol. I guess for my own selfish reasons, I want him close to me, and VA beach is only 3 hours up the road. But I need to learn to "go with the flow" after all, I should be grateful that he's in, with the economy the way it is, I know it's tough to  be accepted. So I'll count my blessings and pray that he doesn't direct me to a website with pics of a new crotch rocket he's just bought! lol. Thank you again, talking with you, makes it a lil easier on me to deal with him being away.
