I was just talking to my son about after his graduation. He's gonna be coming home for 3 weeks and he's what you call Active Duty Navy. Well, I was wanting to go get him from Corry Station, FL. But everybody's trying to tell me that he can catch a flight on a military plane to come home. Is this true because my son tells me that he doesn't have that option. What're your thoughts or do you know if he can do that?

Space Available (Space A) military flights are not guaranteed for those flying for leave and the Sailor could be bumped if the seat is needed for another reason.  It is best not to count on having a seat on a Space A flight.  My Sailor was going to do it once from Japan and we ended up getting last minute tickets because although there were several seats available in the weeks before he was to fly, when it was time for his flight, there were none available and he was going to be on standby for a few days at least.  The Sailor or loved ones must arrange for and pay for transportation home for leave.  You may wish to see Who pays the airfare in the event of a family death or just persona... (clickable link) because there is information there about this.

Chris -

Time to raise the BS flags on your friends...

He probably could catch a Military Airlift Command (MAC) flight.  But he needs to know where his priorities are.  Does he want to pay $300 to fly home, or, does he want to spend a couple days at the MAC terminal hoping to catch a flight that probably will not happen?  To me, time is money.  I'd rather be with my friends than wasting time at a terminal.

Secondly, the flights from NAS Pensacola are very limited.  You can only go to a couple places.

I've done MAC flights many times.  The only time it pays off is if you want to go overseas.  In CONUS, you want to pay your flight yourself.  You truly don't want to go where the military flies.

Check it yourself.  Call the Flight Recording: (850) 452-3311

In fact, call it and put in on speaker phone so your friends can hear it.  Then act stupid and have them explain it.  They will soon realize themselves that it is probably the worst thing you can do. (In the US).

Is he going to a new duty station after leave, or to a new command?  If he is going to a new command, the Navy arranges the flight and he pays only for the leg which take shim home.

If he is going to a new command and you go get him, he has to request a private vehicle move for that leg of the journey. They pay gas mileage according to a chart, and a few travel expenses.  It usually isn't a good idea unless he's moving his car to his new command.  He can ask about that at SATO on base (the travel office).

Thing is he's coming home to Texas from Pensacola Florida. And my brother says he can take a military flight from one of the bases out there. He's not in another country and to drive only takes about 10 hours to get there. I think my family is just wanting to save money. But he'll be coming home for 3 Weeks and them flying out to Italy where he'll be stationed for 2 years

Thank you ladies & gentleman. It's exactly what I've been trying to tell my family, we'll be driving to pick him up. I showed my husband what y'all have written and it's pretty much what my son had told me. Thank you all again. :)
