My son leaves on April 4.  I am now trying to make sure that he has everything he needs.  One of the items listed is a "skinny" wallet.  Is there dimensions anywhere that I should be following,  or is any thin bifold o.k.?  Thanks in advance for your help.

My son took his thin bi-fold wallet. Nothing special about it. Make sure he brings his social security card & license. I also sent my son with a phone card (got it at Rite aid), 4 bandages and some cut up peices of mole skin. This is in case he gets blisters from the new shoes they are issued. I don't know yet if he needed them. There is a list somewhere on this site of things they should have in their wallet. I hope this helps!

Thank you MittenMon.  It is all so confusing, including this site.  Hope your son is doing well.

Bandmom...did u find info on wallet? If not, I read that it should be black if possible but did not see anything about size. You should include his bank card as well as a small price of paper that lists phone numbers as well as addresses of loved. Make sure he knows PIN number. Also if you send a phone card be sure to activate it and try it out prior to his departure date. Banking...best to use Navy federal...he will need his routing number to set up direct deposit when he arrives at RTC, add this info to paper you put in wallet. SR's get paid on 1st and 15th of the month. My son left in January. The site is confusing but I found the best way to utilize it is to go through all pages pertaining to you, read all you can, takes notes than ask questions later. It gets easier if you do this. Good luck to you and your son!

mangofruit123, Thank you.  We werer talking about using Navy Federal.  Can he set that up before he leaves?  Just not sure of anything right now.  Blessings to you and your son.

Bsndmom...yes he can and should set it up before he leaves. Typically the recruiters do this with the kids. Have your son ask recruiter about it. I know A few things as my sons was originally scheduled to graduate on 3/24 but date changed so I've spent a bit more time on this dire. I'll help in anyway I can but of course there is still so much I am learning! We are all in this together now so we need to support one another! The ladies who started this rite are full of answers so don't fret you have a lot of time to prepare. My son wasn't scheduled to leave for RTC until March but recruiter called with an opening in January. Ed had 2 1/2 weeks to prepare. You will do great!

Setting up Navy Fed in advance is really very helpful.  We have been with them since 1977, when my husband joined!  I made the mistake of trying to use hometown banking at first, it was terrible and inconvenient.  Navy Fed pays a day in advance, and covers pay in case of government slow down.  They have branches on most bases.

This site is easier to use on a laptop with "desktop view".  I find it difficult to navigate on my phone or tablet.

Be sure to check out the discussion, Things to Do in the Last Month before Your Future Sailor Leaves for....

Number 1 tells about the wallet. If it fits in his pants pocket and he is able to put it in a tube sock, then it will be fine.
