My son is on his way to boot camp. I've been able to talk to him some on his cell. He seems to be struggling with the separation and thought of "I'm really doing this". Hope it gets better for him. I anticipate "the call" at some point tonight.

Congrats..I was in your shoes 2 weeks ago today..It's a hard road, but a good one. The call will be VERY short and sweet, I got hey, and I love you in...and that was it....This site has been a great place for me to get answers and to vent...keep us up to date on how he is doing..

Hi, chetma. It will be pretty rough on him the first few days and kind of rough for the first few weeks. It does get better. I hope your son understands that the first week or two of boot camp totally suck! About half way through, the divisions start getting it together, and it's not so bad. He might be discouraged (and pissed off) at first, but by the time PIR rolls around, you will see a very proud young Sailor! Eight weeks seems like a long time - until it's over. Best wishes to you and your recruit!

thanks for the support. I got the call at 12:15 am and he sounded exhausted. He had been up since 4:30 am. I know he will do well once he gets into a routine and meets some of the other sailors. Thanks for the encouragement it really helps to know there are others out there.

Yah, that sounds like par for the course. You will most likely not get a real letter from him for a few weeks. They do not get much free time at all. By the time you receive a letter, other than the initial form letter with two or three lines for comments, he will have completed the worst of it. My son sent a few very brief letters, (like reminding me to give the dog fresh water), but spent a lot of time studying. That paid off, as he received the academic excellence award at PIR. I sure hope you will be able to attend your son's PIR. That is absolutely the most rewarding moment I've had as a Mom. It is an awesome ceremony, and you will see a young man that is quite different than the one that left a few days ago.

I wouldn't miss PIR for anything. I know he will be fine, I am going to send him letters as soon as I can. Can you recommend a decent hotel near the base and do you know how far the base is from the Chicago air port?
Comment by Michigan Cindy on October 1, 2010 at 6:50am
There are a lot of decent hotels close to the base, and many of them offer a shuttle to and from PIR. We stayed at the Ramada, which was nice - not luxurious, but clean, comfortable and decent. A lot of people stay at the Navy Lodge. When you get your form letter, there will probably be a pamphlet advertising various hotels. I can't tell you how far the base is from the airport because we drove there. I'm from West Michigan, so it was an easy drive. One bit of advice - if you want to go into the City on Friday afternoon, take the Metra train. We drove to Chicago from Great Lakes, and the traffic was so bad, it took about three hours.
