The USS Robert G Bradley is HOME!!
I feel overwhelmed by the amount of love and support.
I feel fortunate that my son's first deployment was short, to allow us to understand and get a taste of what it's like. He was only underway 2 months of the 7 that the USS Bradley was out. This was the final tour as the ship is scheduled for decommission in March of 2014. We know that our Sailor will be in Florida until then, and they will go out for 2-3 weeks at a time for exercises and training.
BRAVO ZULU SAILORS!!
That moment when the doors open at graduation, is the only comparison to seeing that ship pull in with it's crew manning the rails. Emotions are running high... some coming home to new babies, or ones ready to come any day... the dock is full of family and friends... cameras and signs or posters welcoming the Sailors home. The sense of pride and joy seems to bounce off topside as well as ashore as we patiently wait for that liberty call.
I hadn't seen my son since Jan 4th, after being home on leave for Christmas... Sure we talked on the phone... sent text messages... and skyped, but that hug was long awaited... like many others on the dock that day. - - I was also very thankful for the ship's email... that was a blessing ;)
Italy, Greece, and Portugal... places I will never see, yet my Sailor was blessed with that opportunity. I remember him telling the story at boot camp that the PO asked why he wanted to join the Navy... he told them he wanted to see some water... and that he has!! Lol...
So many stories... he made a list so he wouldn't forget to tell us things... he talked non stop, wish our time with him was longer, but I'm sure we will hear more about it!
He is not taking first or second leave... he is waiting til Aug to come home for his sister's wedding. He's a great little brother ;) That's quite a while since he has been home, and I know he is counting down the days til he can play with his dog in the back yard, and take him fishing, play a little golf with his dad, and of course see a KC Royals game!!
Hang in there, Sailor... your time will come. See you when we see you ;)
Thank you for sharing your story. My son is facing deployment in the near future and this will be our first one. Every little bit of knowledge is helpful. I am very happy your Sailor is home.
