Trying to find out after my son graduates - can he leave the base for the weekend or does he have to check back in to the base at night?  I know he has to stay within a 50 mile radius.  Where do the rest of the family members not atttending graduation hang out?  Can they even come on base?

Yes, everyone ages 3 and older must now be on the Access List to enter the Drill Hall to attend PIR. Your SR does not submit the names for the Access List until about 10 days before PIR, so there is plenty of time to write and let your SR know the 4 names of those who will be attending PIR. See http://www.bootcamp.navy.mil/upcoming_grads.asp and http://www.bootcamp.navy.mil/pdfs/FamilyGuide_v14Mar2013.pdf.

Melissa Ann, to guesstimate the PIR date, count 9 Fridays after arrival to get the most likely PIR date, 06/28/2013, but then know that it could be the week before, 06/21/2013, if he is one of the last to fill a division from the week before (less likely for one arriving at the end of the week as your son did), or the week after, 07/05/2013, if he arrived after the divisions in that week's TG were full, possible for one arriving at the end of the week, but it does not happen often unless something caused extra recruits to ship during the week. See Arrival and What Happens at the RTC within Boot Camp Moms (and loved ones). I invite you to join that group while you are there and to check out the other Pages (found under the pictures of the Members) as well.

When my son had PIR the sailors that were staying on GL for A school had to go to barracks get there stuff and move it to where they are assigned Most of the sailors got liberty depending on there travel to A school. My son along with hundreds more were scheduled to take bus to airport at 12:30 am. My son had liberty only till 8 pm and we had to drop him at base by 7: pm because they had to be checked in by 8 and there were tons of sailors. You are able to meet you sailor at the airport and hang with them until they boarded the plane. We were not aloud to give them there cell phones or laptops until we got to the airport. They were not aloud on GL.
no one knows there next duty until you actually have you sailor in your arms. We stayed at the navy lodge and we booked until the following Monday because the sailors for A on GL was able to have liberty all weekend. Once we met up with our son and found out when he was leaving we checked out early from hotel (no charge to do so) and headed back home. I hope this he's.

I wanted to leave the GL area because I was sad we didn't have the time with our sailor and blessed that everyone that did. PIR is absolutely amazing we had 1001 sailors that graduated that day
