Why are there such insensitive people? Yesterday, I ran into a person who I know (not exactly a friend) and I told him about my son joining the Navy. He immediately said you know they are going to send him to Afghanistan and hopefully he won't get shot. I was stunned. Why would this man say this to a Mom? I had no idea how to respond, so I just walked off without a response. I cried all the way home. When I got home, I called my husband. He assured me that I had nothing to worry about. Our son wants to work on submarines. My husband said that it is highly unlikely that you will find a submarine in Afghanistan.
Most of the people I tell about our son joining the Navy say how wonderful that is and how proud I must be. Granted, we all know there is a possibility that something could happened to our children, but we don't think about that. We like to think about the positive. Why would this jerk (I can think of other names I would like to call this man, but being a Christian, I won't ) say something so nasty and mean? Like my Mother used to say, if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all! Couldn't he just of said that is nice and leave it at that?
My poor son, when he got home from work, I sort of "pounced" on him. Oh well, Moms are allowed to do that!
two comments you can use:
"Freedom isn't Free" - people tend to take our freedom for granted
the other that seems to shut them up is "My son will serve so your's won't get drafted"
I had basically the same thing said to me - cuts right through your heart ~
Although my son hasn't left for bc yet (3/9/2011), I admire and applaud ALL of your answers and suggestions about how to respond to rude busy bodies.
My only child enlisted on his own, without his dad or me knowing he was going to, and we can't be more proud of HIS decision. Because this is totally his decision, we feel he will do very well with a career in the Navy from bc on up. He's 19 and not had a real grasp on what he wants to do with his life until now.
I'm thrilled I found this web site so that I can prepare myself for what's to come. Thank you everyone for your posts and suggestions. They are very helpful to us newbee's!! :)
We are just in the beginning stages of all this so that is why it is so new. My son picked up the paperwork from the Petty Officer last week and we go back on Monday. Nathan, my son, had been at odds about what to do after he graduated. He had talked about joining the Navy, but he also had talked about other options also.
So when he and his Dad said they were going to talk to a Navy Recruiter right after Thanksgiving "just to get information", I knew my son was going to be a sailor. He will be going in after he graduates, I assume something in June.
All of our friends have been so supportive until this jerk. As I said, his comments took me totally by surprise. I was expecting a completely different comment than what I got. So now I know to be prepared.
I absolutely know very little about the Navy. The poor Petty Officer is going to be bombarded with questions! I am so glad I have found this web site. It has been a Godsend!
Happy New Year to you all!
My youngest son is in the Navy, currently at boot, and my oldest son is going to Army boot camp in March. I am so proud of both of them and have a sign in my front yard that says, "My son is Army strong." Yesterday one of my neighbors that I don't really know brought a cake over and thanked me for my son's service. So, remember, not everyone is so ignorant and some people really do appreciate what our kids are doing. :-)
