Why are there such insensitive people?  Yesterday, I ran into a person who I know (not exactly a friend) and I told him about my son joining the Navy.  He immediately said you know they are going to send him to Afghanistan and hopefully he won't get shot.  I was stunned.  Why would this man say this to a Mom?  I had no idea how to respond, so I just walked off without a response.  I cried all the way home.  When I got home, I called my husband.  He assured me that I had nothing to worry about. Our son wants to work on submarines. My husband  said that it is highly unlikely that you will find a submarine in Afghanistan.

Most of the people I tell about our son joining the Navy say how wonderful that is and how proud I must be.  Granted, we all know there is a possibility that something could happened to our children, but we don't think about that.  We like to think about the positive.  Why would this jerk (I can think of other names I would like to call this man, but being a Christian, I won't ) say something so nasty and mean?  Like my Mother used to say, if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all!  Couldn't he just of said that is nice and leave it at that?

My poor son, when he got home from work, I sort of "pounced" on him.  Oh well, Moms are allowed to do that!

@RenoMom, 2boys1girl09, Goatlady & ebigirl,

Let me say "Thank you." in advance and please convey the message to your sons/daughters too. Arm-chair quarterbacks/critics w/o a moment of experience in the military or a moment of sacrifice w their loved ones are all too quick to get in our faces and say something stupid and hurtful. We have become a nation (a society) of apologists and political correctors. For 2011 I am turning back the clock. As J25 said above, "Freedom isn't Free" after all - it has been accomplished on the backs of those of us with sons/daughters out there putting their lives on the line. I am taking a stand.
