My son graduated from his A school in November and will be leaving for a three year deployment to Japan in late December. I have so many questions that I don't know where to begin. I guess starting with life on the ship. What can he bring with him? From what I've read he won't be able to use his new iphone. How can I contact him if there is no internet on the ship? How long before he would be eligible for leave? 6mths,1 year? Once he is eligible for leave is he responsible for buying the plane ticket home?  What unexpected costs are there on the ship that he should be prepared for?

Do join one of the japan moms groups, let me know if you need a link.

He can buy a softbank phone for local calls, and use an app to make calls over wifi in port.  The groups have many details about that. There is a satellite phone on the ship to pay to use at sea.  Lines are long, and it is expensive, but knowing he can call is nice.

He will have a military email to use out at sea, on the ship's computers.  There can be a wait to use the computer, and he will be really busy until he finishes his quals, but there will be contact.  Still send snail mail, they love it.

He won't get to take leave until he finishes his quals, plus the ship's operating schedule, and who else it taking leave in his department/division.  There is no set time, but a year or so could be right.  Yes, he pays for his own ticket, but can use the travel office on base.  They get discounts we cannot access.  He  should get a civilian passport, apply for it NOW.  You can mail it to him'  It will open up leisure travel, and if the ship is in a port on deployment and he needs to travel, or if there is an emergency, he won't have to rely on military transport.  You need a passport too, in case you want to visit (many moms do), or if there is an emergency and you need to go to him (it has happened, be prepared).

Not many costs on the ship.  They have a small store with toiletries, limited uniform stuff, tobacco, and geedunk (candy and sodas).  He has to pay to use the satt phone too, but I think they take calling cards.

Edit to add: he will want money for port visits, for shopping and entertainment.

When he gets to Japan, he will go through a class about the base, and about Japan, how to communicate, get around, the culture and language, the money, shopping and food.  I was in Yokosuka (Yo Ko S'ka) for a long time.  The people are friendly, it is safe, and the food is fantastic.  MWR tours are great.
