Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.
DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

My son went to basics on June 7th and I still have not recieved a letter from him! We did recieve the one with his password and address. Im hoping tomorrow I will have a surprise in the mail:) Is this normal? My sons graduation date will be on Aug 3rd looking for other family members with the same graduation date for there loved one ? After graduation will our son be able to go with us right away or do we have to come back for him at a later time?
iceangel...YES, it's true and it does stink. My son PIR'd 5/6/2011. It was WHILE he was in bootcamp that RTC CHANGED the protocal for when the new Sailors flew out of Great Lakes to their A schools. Talk about one grumpy new Navy mom!
We DROVE from WA State to Great Lakes. I had already made hotel reservations. Everything changed in a heart beat. We had about 6 hours after PIR before our son had to be back on his ship and in his rack that Friday night. Then we were up at 3:30AM to meet him at the airport before his flight left for California. All told, we were able to spend about 10 hours total with him before he was off to the WEST COAST!!! I tell you this because....
I would NOT have changed a thing. Just being able to attend PIR was in and of itself one of the experiences as a mom and as an American. My son's PIR group had 12 divisions total, which I'm told is a very high number of divisions for one PIR. I picked him out of his division right away, as his division was the very first one to come through the HUGE garage door!!
Please do not let the amount of time you will be able to see your son be the deciding factor in deciding to attend PIR or not. I promise you, you will be VERY glad that you attended. :-)
Josie: The SR's are made to wait two weeks before they are allowed to write letters on Sundays. So, by looking at the calendar, yours is probably writing for the first time today. Depending on where you live, you might get mail from RTC Wed.-Friday of this week. We live in WA and our mail day was Thursday's.
They are allowed to write on Sundays, but recieve mail all week, so keep those letters flowing. My son told us that every SR LIVED for mail call...they couldn't get enough!!
Hi Josie...What Ship/Div is your son in? My son is Ship 11 Div 231, PIR 8/3/12. Have you found our PIR Group here on N4M's? We also have a very active Group on FaceBook if you're interested. Here's the link:
