My son left for BC on 2/20. The next couple of weeks were my toughest. Friends were /are supportive, but I missed him sooo much!! Once you get the phone call when he can talk for a few minutes, it changes everything! I couldn't believe the changes I heard in him. I am even more proud of him. I wear a lapel pin (navy crest and US flag) over my heart. It helps me remember how important my son, my God, my country, and the Navy are to all of us! Use this site, too. It has helped me greatly!

I feel your pain...my only son left for bootcamp 6-15-09...graduated BC 08-07-09..that was the longest 8 weeks I'd ever been through....that first day he left makes you feel like crying....like your heart is gonna just break into a million pieces...then you get that "I'm here" phone call on the night/morning after he leaves....the sadness starts again...each day gets better and you begin to feel like you can make it through this...then you start looking forward to the weekly letters and maybe even a phone call or two....it really makes your day when you receive mail or phone calls....then you start looking forward to graduation day when you can see your son and realize the transformation he has gone through to become an extraordinary young man and a US Sailor....it is the most wonderful feeling....just like the day he was born...Here I am....9 months later...my son has finished A-school in Great Lakes....is stationed in Gulfport, MS....just 2 hours from home....leaving for Afghanistan in less than 3 weeks...another hurdle to cross....another sad time to go thru...but now I have realized that this is just life....ups and downs....good and bad...you learn to appreciate each day and all contact that you have....love your son....keep yourself busy.....pray.....and know that you have a most precious commodity...a United States Sailor...Bravo Zulu to your son for his choice to serve....and stay strong Navy Mom...we'll be here to help you all we can!
