Thank You so Much !!! It is a really hard thing letting go isnt it ?? Once they are out of BC.. do you have any time at home with them , or do they leave right away ?? Also, can he contact us after BC ??? Thank you so much !! We plan on having lots of cook outs and just spending time together, as we know the Holidays will be tough. Have a Great Day !!!

My son decided two months ago to join the Navy. This was a complete shock to me since we were in the process of filling out college applications since he is graduating in June from high school..What a surprise this was. He just took his physical on Tuesday and was offered the job he wanted and sworn in the same day. He is scheduled to leave in January 2011. I am proud of him and this decision but I am sad because I know that days going to come where he has to leave and I am not ready for that. Does it get easier? I am so grateful for this website and all the Moms that write..Alot of questions have been answered here. We have to stick together Moms....lol...:)

I feel the same way !! My son graduated last year,, did the College thing, and felt it wasnt for him. He was talking about the Navy here and there nothing serious... then one day he asked my husband to take him to the Recruiter.. who has been great .For me, I keep telling myself he is 18,, and will be 19 when he leaves,, he is an adult , and I know that he knows this is right for him !! I plan to have an awesome summer with our son and extended family.. and enjoy the time he is here !! He leaves November 9th,, and I am loving every day he is here .. and it is driving him nuts...LOL.. you are SO right we all do need to stick together !! This site is amazing and I am so blessed I was told about it !!!

Hi Everyone,

Similiar to the stories above, my son decided to join the Navy and just completed his physical on the 13th. He's off to boot camp in Great Lakes on November 16th. I am so proud of him. He has been assigned AO and after boot camp will go to Pensicola Fl for A school. Not sure how much time I will have with him after PIR. I was told by his recruiter that it could be a few hours or the next morning. So the key right now is to find out as much as I can, spend as much time with him as I can and meet as many Navy Moms as I can. I am not sure if there is a November 2010 boot camp group as of yet. Does anyone know? You are the first group of moms I have met that have the most similarities as I.

His recrutier visited my husband and I and informed me. He provided Stephen (my son) with what their obligations are to each other. Stephen must call in every Monday morning and visit the base assigned to him the second Thursday of every month. Have you had the same support from your sons recruiter? If not, I would call him and ask that he visit you. From what I was told, he will come by once a month. Stephen is still a senior in High School and will still be 17 when he arrives boot camp. :( I will miss his big 18th b-day on the 26th of December. I will share any new info I get with you. It would be great to have each others support through this process. I am from Brooklyn NY.

Congratulations to your son. I have 2 children in the Navy who went to boot camp a year apart. It is very different to have daily contact to very limited contact. You will get the 5 second call they have arrived at the Great Lakes. Then you will get a box of their clothes they wore to boot camp. That part is a bit hard. You will get a form letter and your child will write a few brief words. Then if all goes well they can usually write on Sundays. My sons both said keep the letters coming. That helped them both tremendously. Do not send musical cards since they usually remove the musical portion of them. Do not send any food to boot camp. If the division is doing what they need to do you will get more phone calls and if not it will be extremely limited. This is an adjustment phase to get your child acclamated into miliatry life. It is hard on both of you but you will survive. You son will come out a better person and a more mature individual. Keep the words of love, support, and encouragement coming. Best of luck to your son. Just a FYI when you son graduates from boot camp the amount of time you can spend might vary. My oldest son had the weekend to spend with the family after bootcamp. My youngest son only had a few hours to spend with the family before he was sent to A school. Best of luck to all of you.

I guess our kids will always throw a brick one way or another. That's what parenting is all about. WAIT till it's their turn. LOL!!! So I see most of us have the seem feelings all wrapped up in one. The sad, excited, nervous and proud emotion! Just think of the great job we have all done so far and the direction they are heading to.... We should stand tall and give ourselves a pat on the back. It will be a long ride but we can stay in touch and continue to pass information and share stories. That is what this great site is all about.

Navytwo- thanks for your words or wisdom!
