Ebony - take a deep breath, you've joined a site with a great bunch of ladies who are here when you need them! You can call his recruiter and get his address even before the form letter is sent to you. Get some phone cards from walmart or where ever you can get them, have them activated and send them in your letters.

My son just started his 3rd week there and I still have moments where I just want to crawl in a hole and not come out til PIR. I promise it will all be ok. Lean on us when you need to, it's a rough ride we moms are going on and we are here for one another. Warm hugs to you.

Ebony -- I did the same with my daughters clothes.  I couldn't wash them for about 3 weeks.  I'd sit in her room and cry.  Today I got the call that "She's officially a sailor and see you at graduation".  I CAN'T believe I missed that call.  I was so upset. I saved my daughter's message that she left when she landed in Chicago and saved the one from today.  You're son will make it.  Its harder on us.  I think in part because we know deep down our children will be much different.  I find myself thinking, can I still give her that same mom hug and kiss on the cheek?  Can we still kid around?  For me, it is a fear and longing of the days when she was in braids and curtsied and said, "mommy, may I have some miss you chips?".  I had know idea what this 5 year old meant but it was a fond memory.  So with that Ebony, crying is good.  Embrace your son's journey, write a lot and send many letters.  The recruits really rely on it and it gives them the strength they need.  God bless you both!

Ebony - I don't see anything wrong with keeping his sweatshirt. I use a box mine made me that has a few of his favorite things in it as well as cologne. I've been so stressed about not hearing from him that when a letter did come I crashed and took a 2 1/2 hour nap...something I never do. I haven't been able to go in his room yet. I will probably wait until after PIR to jump that hurdle. It will get better, I promise.

Ang, so true about the phone!  My daughter PIR's this Friday. I can't wait to see her.  Unfortunately, I was in a meeting when she called with the "I'm a sailor now" and did not have my phone with me.  She left a message but I felt as if I had been punched in the stomach.  I felt so sad that I did not talk to her.  At least I have her message.  Not sure if she will call before PIR.   I hope so.
