091106-N-9712C-002 NEW ORLEANS (Nov. 6, 2009) Spectators watch as a formation of F/A 18 Hornets assigned to Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 204 fly over the dedication of a new building at the National World War II Museum. World War II veterans and military service members stationed in the New Orleans area were guests of honor for the dedication. The event was part of New Orleans Navy Week, one of 21 Navy Weeks planned across America in 2009. Navy Weeks are designed to show Americans the investment they have made in their Navy and increase awareness in cities that do not have a significant Navy presence. Hello everyone!

Navy Weeks are here!

To give you a little background on Navy Weeks, they are set up by the US Navy with the intent to reach out to cities all over the nation and give residents a chance to learn about the Navy. To allow people a good look into the diverse roles available in the Navy, these weeklong celebrations can include:

  • Performances by the Navy Leap Frog Parachute Team and the Blue Angels
  • Dive demonstrations and dive tanks
  • SEAL fitness challenges
  • Navy rock and ceremonial bands
  • Flight and other interactive simulators
  • Appearances by Admirals, divers and sailors
  • Community service projects
  • Events with local sporting teams
  • Much more!

This year there have been 20 cities chosen to host the Navy Week events, starting with Tampa Bay, followed by Phoenix, Charleston, San Antonio, Des Moines, Kansas City, Birmingham, Spokane, Little Rock, Milwaukee, Boston, The Twin Cities, Chicago, Boise, Baltimore, Cleveland, St. Louis, Salt Lake City, Atlanta, and Dallas-Ft. Worth.

Although N4M is not sponsoring Navy Weeks, it is encouraged that you volunteer and get involved. If you are interested in offering some time, please send me a PM so that I can forward your information to the right Navy contacts.

Below are some Do's and Don'ts to remember:

DO get involved with Navy Weeks

  • You are encouraged to participate in Navy Week activities when appropriate.
  • If you want to get involved with the Navy coordinators, your group should appoint a " spokesperson to coordinate with the Navy (this will alleviate multiple calls on same topic). The Navy Week points of contact can be found navyweek.org. Go to the schedule and click on the city that you are interest in. The point of contact for that city's Navy Week will be listed.

DO NOT independently contact the flag officers or VIP participants involved in your town's Navy Week, but do work through the appointed Navy Week points of contact listed on www.navyweek.org

I have created Event pages for each city. You can find them here:

Hi Denise-
Navy Weeks are held each year. About 20 cities/towns are selected based on a wide range of criteria with careful consideration given to aspects such as anchor events, Blue Angels air shows, asset availability, city size, demographic make-up, geographic region, relationship building, relationship sustainment and new outreach opportunities. The cities/towns that I listed above are the ones that were selected for 2010. If anything is to come up in the Portland area, I will keep you in mind for volunteering! :)

Hi John n. and mom-
Unfortunately, Tampa Bay Navy Week has passed as it was held on March 13-21. To review all the dates, just visit http://www.navyweek.org/soe.htm

I've been telling everyone in Illinois and Missouri to save the week! Cannot wait until September. On another note, our Collinsville, IL office has moved to new digs! And, it's right by where I go for my occasional splurge of a pedicure. Stopped in and took cookies last week for Easter---Andy was fortunate to have such a great recruiter.
