No longer a DEPper Mom...but now a Bootcamp Mom

Well...yesterday was the BIG day that I turned my son over into the hands of the Navy.  It was an emotional day and really LONG for all of us.  We woke up early and got ourselves ready and then headed over to MEPS to meet up with my son.  There were 4 kids shipping out that day.  2 Navy and 2 Air Force.  The other Navy recruit was from our recruiting office.  The swearing in was really neat and we got to take LOTS of photos.  They even let us take pictures of our son signing his contract. That was a special moment especially because I'm a scrapbooker and want to have as many photos of this experience as possible.  We were then told that we could drive our son to the airport.  We were so thrilled!  Once we got to the airport and got him checked in on his flight, we asked about getting gate passes.  We were told NO which was sad, but we understood.  They told us that they only let families who are sending troops off on deployment.  So...we went to a waiting area by the security checkpoint and hung out a little bit.  We could tell my son was getting anxious so we didn't prolong the waiting.  We said our "see ya laters" and gave him hugs.  I held up pretty well, but as soon as I hugged him, the tears squeezed out of my eyes.

This was his first time flying, so we made sure he got a window seat.  The flight had a connection in Phoenix, so he actually got to see the Grand Canyon from above.  He is so lucky!  They arrived in Chicago and thankfully they ate a good dinner.  We had a LONG LONG drive back home and we were hoping that we wouldn't get the call before we made it home.  Thankfully it didn't come till two hours later.  We were so emotionally drained and tired from the day that we couldn't even stay awake.  I was afraid that we wouldn't hear his phone call when it came, but thankfully we did hear the phone ring.  We got the "I'm Here" call about 11:30pm Pacific time.

It was so hard to let go yesterday...but we have stepped into new territory and we are ready to take it on!  We get to start a new countdown clock today.  One that is thankfully much shorter than the one that we started when he swore into DEP.  So now we have a new learning curve to deal with.  A new way of life.  A new path ahead of us. It may not be an easy path, but I support my son in his decision and look forward to sharing many adventures ahead with him.  I'm so excited for my son.  I know he is going to do GREAT in the Navy and I know that we are going to be so PROUD to see him in his dress whites in just 8 weeks.  I'm ready to embrace this new title of Bootcamp Mom and show my son that I've got the grit it takes to get through just like he did.

Hi Boot Camp Mom #2(Nadine)! Thank you to your daughter for her service. Wow...just turning 18 in BC...that is a big change for her and for you as a Mom too. Hugs to you. Happy Birthday to your daughter. I don't think they serve soda at BC...but I could be wrong. I think it's milk, juice, tea, water. We really liked the whole MEPS experience. It was very professional and organized and personal too. It made for some really nice memories. Our SRs are going to GREAT and so are we!

Hi there to both Boot Camp Moms...My daughter will be leaving on 4 August -...I am more excited for her to finally start her career in the Navy..She is a college grad and has been waiting to leave for 2 years.  She was ROTC through high school and surrounded by quite a few family member and friends that are active duty in all three branches.  So even though my daughter is not 18 and is older it is still a sad and exciting step.  I am looking forward to seeing her swear in and be a proud member of the US Navy and I will be one PROUD Navy Mom.

Congratulations to your daughter Mak9kakmom. That is so awesome that she made it through college and is planning on serving her country. That takes a lot of determination. She will be GREAT in the Navy and make you so proud. I was NJROTC all four years of high school and loved it. I had intentions of going into the military, but it just never happened. I'm so glad that I get to experience it through my son. It's such an honor to be part of the Navy family.

Hi Sierrascrapper, As you know this week has been a rollercoaster.  I cant help but wonder what my son is doing.  His 21st Bday is Tuesday needless to say I am not looking foward to that day, first time we will not be together.  But like you I am sure I know this is a good thing!

Just wanted to say hi and I'm right with you!

Hi Lanies68ny...BIG NMH to you. It has got to be so hard to not be there for the first time for your son's birthday. Maybe you could do something fun in his honor that day. Something that he would want to do. It might help take your mind off of missing him.

I am constantly thinking about what my son is doing too. Just wondering what the experience is like for him and how he feels about it. Of course if I asked him how was his day at boot camp today (kinda like when he came home from school everyday)...he would probably answer "Boot Campy" (like he would say schooly every day) LOL Somehow...that just makes me laugh inside.

Hang in there...we are going to make it through just fine, just like our kids!

I thought it would be easier sending her off since she is older and wiser but I am still waiting for the "letter"...recruiter told me I could possibly get her address from him by the end of the week is that possible????????????

mak9kakmom...when did your daughter leave?  If she JUST left...you will want to wait til you get the Form Letter in the mail.  Many times Moms get the address from the recruiter and then the SR gets moved to a different division and they may not get their mail.  You don't want that to happen.  Just wait patiently.  My son's form letter came a day after his BOX came and we got the box about a week after he arrived.  It can take longer though.

That's what I thought too!!! I did go to hallmark and stock up on some blank cards and some stationary trying to get a basket of items for writing and keeping her up to date on what is happening while she is not around ---she is a big sports fan so football season is starting with out her so I will send her newspaper articles and updates on all of that too!!! Now just waiting for the "letter"
