Not Graduating on Time (S03/DIV017/PIR12-03

I was getting so excited to be able to finally see my sailor...only 2 more weeks before graduation. However, she just called. In the 2 minutes she was able to talk, she informed me that she has just been diagnosed with stress fractures of her legs. She said that she probably wouldn't be able to graduate for another 2-3 mos. Does anyone know how this will affect her daily routine, and will she have to start all over again? I'm trying to stay strong but it's very hard when I don't know whats going on. Any advice?

She won't have to start over...she will be sent to RCU in all liklihood which is the Recruit Convalescent Unit. There they will help her rehab. You will get more calls from her to fill you in on what is happening. There is a group on Navy For Moms for people in this division. You will find support and encouragement there. Many recruits complete their academic studies while in RCU and then join another division to complete their things like firefighting and battlestations etc. Remember she is going to be very frustrated so it will be important that you stay upbeat and continue to encourage her. Be sure to ask her what the rules will be for her to get liberty during Christmas. I don't know what the options are, but in your next call, be sure to inquire. Good Luck and l will keep you both in my prayers.

There is a group here for recruits in this situation. I don't know the name of it, but I'm betting "ship 5".

This happened to my friend. He studied, volunteered to help the POs and did everything he could to stay busy. He avoided hanging out with the biggest whiners as they depressed him. Actually, his leg was broken outright by another recruit, by accident. Stress fractures are common, the Navy knows how to treat them efficiently. Tell her to hang in there, stay busy, do as much as she can. Hey, she's accumulating pay and leave days, so it isn't a total loss of time.

my daughter has been on med hold for the past 3 weeks from what was told to us was a stress fx. of her hip she was in weeks 5/3 of her bootcamp she is now in phase 3 of 4 in her rehabilatation and each person heals at there on pace once thay get in to phase4 thay can start advancing towards there graduation (computer work and tests and such) hang in there it's not the end of the world for her just a little set back my daughter is on ship4 divison 2341 she will not go to ship 5 unless she is being discharged from the navy.

To all my new friends: Thank you all so much for responding, I feel so much better now. Funny thing, I think I am more saddened by this setback than she is (although I would never let on to her.) I think what bugged us the most was the poor timing of this accident. At the last minute, there was an opening for her to leave and start bootcamp 6 weeks early. It was so perfect since she would be done before her birthday, Christmas and New Years. At now we're back at the beginning. They say everything happens for a reason, so I just have to keep a positive attitude and be thankful it wasn't more seroius.

hi lynn it's heartbreaking for us as well as them I know my daughter was set to graduate tomorrow 11/19/2010 until 3 week ago when she called home and told us she had been hurt and would not graduate on time she is telling me it will be after new years before she graduates now because even if she joins a division in the next 2 weeks the battalstations are down for 3 weeks in december and she can't graduate without that so, so we just need to wait it will come in time. she's in good spirits and looking forwars to moving on as soon as she can the people will take very good care of your daughter thay have verry good doctors and a pt dept. on base that will take good care of her so stay strong and write to her every day and she will be fine in time.
