One more online class, macroeconomics, and my Sailor will have earned her Bachelors degree from Southern New Hampshire University! She's been on the east coast, west coast and the far side of the world and by the end of the summer she will have a degree in Business Admin from a college less than 3 miles from home.

Bad news is that she has used up her Tuition Assistance for the year and may have to pay out of pocket for this last one. There is always the GI Bill, but she's saving that for her Masters or whatever schooling she wants when she leaves the Navy in another year or two. Still, a $117,000 education (tuition only) and not a penny in student loans! Such a deal. Thank you, US Navy.

Awesomeness CryptoDad! So happy for your daughter! I just saw a news story on the Today show this morning, about 70% of college graduates getting out of school with astronomical student loan debt! Well Done Sailor!

Any Sailor who doesn't look into the Navy College Program is tossing away $4000 a year. I urge all parents to encourage their Sailors to look into NCP while in active service.

We visited the SNHU military office while daughter was still in DEP and got all the info on NCP, the Distance Learning Partnership and GI Bill  with the intent that she could enlist for 4 years, pick up enough online classes to guarantee SNHU admission and return home to wrap up her degree at  SNHU as a full time student. Well, that plan got modified when she re-enlisted, but it all played out for the best. Its never too early to look into these alternatives to the traditional plan of college straight out of high school. College vs Navy is not an either/or choice. Your sailor can do both. And not only will my Sailor leave active duty (she's planning on the Navy reserves) with a degree and no loans, but with a resume and work experience that will blow away most employers. Your sailors can have it all.

Awesomeness again CryptoDad! I have a little notebook I keep excellent information like this! I will be passing along to my son. He just returned from deployment on Friday! He just celebrated first year in March! I'm his biggest cheerleader!

I thought I heard there is a certain amount of time they have to be enlisted prior to getting Tuition Assistance. Is it 1 year? With so many online schools, how does one make sure it is certified?  And does the sailor have to pay for the tuition and then get reimbursed? Any information would be helpful. Thanks
