Hello all, I just wanted to put this out there for any parents who may have children leaving for BC. Our SR left May 8th 2018. Before he left we had a conversation about all of his bills. I told him while he was gone that I would take care of stuff for him. Car, tags, insurance, a credit card, and a few other things. I didn't realize at that time that we should have gotten paper work drawn up for me to be his power of attorney. I went to the DMV to try to deactivate his tags on his car, it was a no go. Because I wasn't his power of attorney. I ended up just turning his tags in. So just a heads up for any one that might need the info. It may be something that you want to look into before they leave in case you have to intervene at any time while they are gone. Hard lesson learned for this parent. :)
Sorry you had to go through that. My son left on 5/29 and the weekend before he left that was one of the things we did. We drew up the POA and one for Medical and got them notarized at the bank. You never know when it will be needed and the POA helps tremendously when working with their bills, insurance, phone and car.
Tabitha - about 4 years ago I went to the DMV here in CA with my sons POA to take care of some vehicle stuff for him and they told me he had to do it. I showed them the POA and explained he was in the military and in another state and they told me too bad - DMV doesn't take POA. They were not helpful at all - he eventually got it done but it required lots of phone calls by him and much time on hold with DMV. Bottom line is our DMV told me that POA doesn't cover DMV things.
There is a military POA that can be completed, it is a SPOA (Special Power of Attorney). It can be written to handle specific items. I have one specifically for my sons car (and have one for other things).
The SPOA I have for my sons car specifically turns over possession, operation, and maintaining his vehicle to me. The DMV hesitated at first, but I told them to read it again. :) Once the supervisor read it she said, "Give her anything she needs." Sometimes it is that extra "try again, and do better" reply that makes it happen. :)
Thank you all for the input. Wish I had of done more research before he left and not after. :( Ellen0502 where do I find that SPOA form at?
Glad you brought up the issue of a POA. As a practicing lawyer for "too many years", I can assure you than no N4M has regretted having her sailor execute one, only those that are without a POA lament at the lack of having taken this step. If anyone one needs a simple POA that also covers medical and is durable (which does not mean irrevocable), message me and I can send you the form I have used.
Hi LeAnn, that would be so wonderful! I had no idea where to even start to get one. I was told to have a lawyer draw the paper work up and them have it notarized by the bank. But didn't know how much it could cost.
No need to pay the legal fee for a simple form I have. Your son at BC will likely need to wait till A school to sign, have it notarized on base and return it to you. Sent you the form!
We BEGGED our son for POA and Medical -He refused. Sucks because now we have concerns and he has bills. Oh well. He will have to figure that out with extra interest. Hopefully BC will change his tune and he will give us medical POA which I understand is really important. To LeAnn, I would appreciate forms! He graduates 7/6 hopefully.

The SPOA (special power of attorney) that my son gave me was something that he was able to download from a military site that he has access to (they all do). I will ask him where he got it from. I know there are lots of "legal" forms etc available to them.
