I am trying to get my brain around the exact description and process of the pre-BUDS program.  Here is what I understand it to be, but please straignten me out if I am wrong. My son just left for boot camp. He has an MA rating, but he wants to get into pre-BUDs at boot camp.  His recruiter told him that at GL boot camp, they would ask who wanted to try out for pre-BUDs. Is it just a case of raising your hand to volunteer or is it more involved than that? Is pre-BUDS an 8 week boot camp separate from, but simultaneous with the regular 8 week boot camp? I have also heard that pre-BUDs starts after the 8 week basic boot.camp, PIR, and is conducted  at a Naval facility at GL. If that is true, how long is the pre-BUDSt training that would enable a recruit to qualify  for the Coronado Beach, BUDs training.? So far Navy For Moms has been a God-send of valuable information to me as a new Navy mom. I hope that someone can give me an accurate explanation of this subject. Thanks.

Thank you for that information.  My son ships to BC on 8/16 and from there to pre-buds and he did prequalify and his recruiter told us he HAD to prequalify. He's been working his butt off with a retired Navy "person" to get ready for BUDS...  So I'm relieved it's more than just a raise of the hand and his hard work has not been in vain.  Thank you so very much for the information.
