Anyone else with an SR on Ship 09 Div 291?  My son left for Great Lakes on 7/12, we received his package of belongings today 7/18.  I hear that form letters are next.

My SR also left on 07/12/11 and I also received the box today.  I really hope to hear from him this week, cause I don't know how I'm going to carry on if I don't hear from my SR soon.

Wait til you get his form letter...it will have his correct complete address, PIR date, a pamphlet with a list of accomodations, hopefully a short note from your SR (Seaman Recruit)and you can double check his SHIP/DIV. Plus your password to get your gate pass for PIR (never reveal this password publicly-PIR is by invitation. Your SR will put up to four names on an invite list. Most times if extras are brought-they will get in-with proper ID-they just have to wait to see if there is room in the Hall. This works with smaller Training Groups.)

It is not the 09/01 one and it ends in 290. SO, based on what USUALLY happens your PIR could be as early as the NEXT week which would be 09/09 (PIR is usually on a Friday with the exception of some weeks where there is a National Hoilday as in the case of 09/01)

You may not hear from your SR for up to three weeks by letter. They are in temp quarters for the first few days to a week as they go through "P" days-processing days. Once they get into their SHIP/DIV they then have to appoint and train a MRPO-Mail Recruit Petty Officer. The MRPO then has to pass a test to be allowed to handle the mail as it is Federal.

Start writing letters now and send as soon as you get the form letter. You can number and date them so your SR knows in what order they are!

Please send on regular white paper in plain white envelopes. AVOID stickers, glitter, colored envelopes...anything that draws attention to your SR! They may have to open it in front of their RDC! Pictures are fine but WILL be inspected for content. (you will get more tips on sending jokes and such W/O hopefully drawing attention and a suggestion on "how to" when you get into your PIR group)

NO packages and NO Musical cards...they could be made to dance or do IT (intensive training) to them!

Anything "bulky" will be opened in front of the RDC's.

CALLS-no guarantee! Usually "three"..."I'm here" when they first arrive; "I'm still alive" around week three; and "I'm a Sailor" right after Battlestations(last week of BC) -their final test to pass that changes there status to Sailor. ANY calls in between those are "earned"-passing tests, polishing shoes well etc!

Watch your cells for an 847 area code!

P.S. These are BRIEF descriptions of what will happen-when you get into your PIR group you will get and/or ask about more details!

Good Luck and Welcome!

Thank you fireteamleaderwife, that information was all very helpful.  I'm beginning to think the ship and division # the recruiter gave me isn't correct as I haven't seen anyone else from this division.  Maybe it changes after P week...?

Thank you, I'll check it out.

Still nothing today, maybe the phone will ring tonight, no I'm not sitting around waiting for it, but yes, I am sitting around waiting for it.  I feel alone with no communication from others in 09/291; my SR can't be the only one, I hope we have received the correct information from the recruiter.  I keep thinking give it one more day and we will hear something.  I think I was doing okay until we received his belongings last night and then it stirred up how much we miss him all over again.  Missing my son and just want to give him a hug and tell him once again I love him and am very proud of him.  Not typically one to mope but this is hard.

rcmsmom, I finally broke down and got my boyfriend's information from the recruiter as well. We still have not received his form letter, but from what I have been hearing from other people who have had someone leave just a week or two before ours is that the form letter takes about a week and a half-two weeks. So I'm not expecting anything until the end of the week, possibly even the beginning of next week. I'm sure your recruiter got your information right and hey we'll be at PIR together I'm sure our SRs will be friends!

Thanks for the update.  I'll let you know when we receive something.  Have a good night.

That's what his recruiting officer gave me... Hopefully his parents will get the letter in the next couple of days (or you will!) So we can find out for sure! Thanks, you have a good night too!
