OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

A follow up to my first Blog about spammers as the issue seems to have resurfaced...

I want to begin by apologizing for any uneasiness the spammers on this site may have caused. I have been banning them as soon as I spot them or am alerted to them. Some of them clearly have profiles that imply that they are here for the wrong reasons - others do not and go about spamming through PM's etc. - which is where your help is vital. To find out how to best alert me to a spammer, please see my previous blog post on this subject here.

The Navy is alerted about spammers and we communicate with them on how the problem is managed. They are aware that spamming is something that happens to every community, even more so to one of our size.

In regards to privacy - no member on this site has access to your personal email account. The messages you receive from Ning are notifications about activity on the site ( someone sending you a PM, someone writing on your wall, a group email, etc.). You can adjust which messages come to you via your Settings. Learn how by clicking here. You can also make adjustments to your page settings by clicking “Settings” and the selecting the “Privacy” tab. You can choose who views your photos and events. There is also an option to approve comments to your page before they are posted.

**UPDATE**
There is now an option to decide who can view your profile. Visitors who don’t have access to your profile page will only be able to view your name, photo and your basic information, like age, gender and location. You can modify this setting by clicking "Settings" and then selecting the "Privacy" tab.

This site IS Navy sanctioned and they have worked with us on the site guidelines. If everyone followed them there would be nothing within this community that is a security issue. With over 10,000 members, there will always be some red flags - and I search the site every day looking for them and always welcome and appreciate help from our members. Your own choices regarding photos, videos, and how much you reveal in a PM are entirely in your hands so long as they follow guidelines listed here.

As far as further measures go - I am contacting Ning to see if there is anything else they can offer us to assist with the spam issue. Group admins can also disable group messaging so that spammers cannot enter and send mass messages to group members.

We're doing what we can on our end to work on this. I ask that you do the same. I appreciate your concern and I know that if we work together we can make this situation better for everyone. :)

Thank you once again---your job is endless. And yes, we do need to watch out for each other just like ship mates would.

Rose - If you followed my suggestions in regards to electing to moderate your page comments and not receive emails from groups you would be preventing many of the spammers from reaching you.
