I finally received a call from my son today! I was laying in bed thinking of him and BAM....the phone rings 847 area code! I  yelled "It's HIM" and couldn't pick up the phone fast enough! LOL....he sounds great! He's past his PT tests so far (more to come), but said the inspections are tough. He loves (he's picky) the food! Had his molars pulled and his BC glasses issued! The peanut butter shot hurt! He did mentioned that a lot of the recruits were sick with a virus and the last week he got and had to pull watch, which was tough, but he got through it! He said to send q-tips which is hilarious as I was always on him to clean his ears....! He sounds awesome...this was the best 20 minutes of my life!

Congrats! My son got sick just before Battlestations...the very last test before PIR. He almost fell asleep DURING battlestations, a huge no-no. The rest of his division brothers rallied together and made sure NOBODY fell asleep. This is what their bc experience is meant to teach them, along with tons of other things. Everyone of them passed! He made his phone calls(s) and headed to medical!

I was always after my son about his ears also...must be a boy thing.

I've been waiting for my first phone call.  My son has been at Great Lakes for 3 weeks now.  I did receive 2 letters, but would love to hear his voice.  He did not mention the molars, although he was told they would pull them when he got up there.  I can't wait until his graduation on June 29th . . :)

Navymom, you should be receiving a call soon. I know that the calls started on Wednesday. Just hearing his voice brought me peace of mind. It's just a step closer for us...June 29th! I can't wait to put my arms around him and kiss him...and squeeze him....lol! Just to touch him....this was the longest I have gone without him...and it's insane. I try to look at it as an adventure for the both of us...though mine is more of an emotional roller coaster ride! Keep us posted as soon as you hear from your son!

My daughter has been in GL for a week now. Can't believe they get to call again. That's so great. When my husband was in bootcamp twenty years ago they only got the one 15 seccond call at the beginning....im trying to stay strong for the rest of my family, but im missing her so much. Did anyone's son or daughter go in on the 21st?

Sorelle and Missingmysam read this:

P.S. this site is amazing...without it I would be a basketcase. We know what you are going through. It's only been 4 weeks for me (1st week is processing)...but the time is flying by. You'll have good moments and bad moments...but remember they are ok and they are safe. I keep saying I sent my son to the Navy, but I'll get a Sailor in return...and soon enough they will be in our arms. Hugs to both of you!

PHONE CALLS

Mostget 3 calls:

the"I'm here" call,

the"I'm still alive" call (3 weeks) and

the"I'm a Sailor" call (after Battlestations)...

Someonly get the last one, some get all, some get more....depends on the division,RDC and the rct. They are NOT guaranteed to call.Watch for the 847 area code.Sometimes they get a quick info call the first week or two...the ID is USGovernment. They all need calling cards...it eats up 30 minutes to just make a call from apayphone....so they need a bunch of minutes. They can buy calling cards at theNEX. If you send them one ...make sure it is activated first (saves time) When you get your first call DO YOUR BEST NOT TO CRY…you SR will be emotionaland most likely will be tearful and if they’re not, they will be if you are andthen you’ll waste valuable talking time crying. Let them talk…they don’t get to talk much at boot camp, have questions and apen and paper by the phone to jot down what they say. When they call and youhear their sweet voice…everything you wanted to ask will go out of your mind. If they are upset reassure them, let them know that it will get better, it isonly a few weeks and after boot camp it is MUCH better. Tell them you lovethem, yes you do miss them but are looking SO forward to seeing them marchthrough those doors at PIR. Then, hang up and come on here and cry and shout and be happy that you heardfrom your SR !!! In the Navy, "no news is good news." They are allowed to contact youalmost immediately if something goes wrong, and if they cannot, the Navy does.It was just over five weeks from the time my son left home and his first call, four weeks is typical.

************************************************************************************************************************

Onething to add to this is that occasionally the SRs get a quick"information" call during the first few weeks. The caller ID is"US Government" then and area code still "847". If your SRis in the 800 divisions, IT, CTT, CTI (any job that handles confidential info)have phone numbers, addresses of references, scout masters, teachers, employers, friends, etc. by the phone.

Usuallythis call is short and sweet but sometimes the RDC will let them chat for a fewminutes. Have questions by the phone that you need to ask....have these readyfor the 3 week call as well.

TenaciousDee . . thanks for the info.  My son Jackson is the youngest of 3 boys . . I cried when he left for kindergarten . . lol  However, I have really been at peace with his decision to join the Navy.  After playing baseball since the age of 4 and wanting to play college ball, he just decided one day that he was finished with it and made the decision to enlist.  He spent the last year working out, running, swimming, biking etc . . He said he was training to show up, instead of showing up to train.  I am very proud of him, but that doesn't make me miss him any less.  I can not wait to hear his voice. Wondering if any other moms out there have a son or daughter graduating on June 29th . . 814 division ?
