Hello everyone my name is Cheryl. First time on the blog. Could someone tell me how my son calls home? Recruiter said he could keep his phone but it just came in The Box. So nervous he wont be able to call home. Read about sending them a prepaid phone card but worried it wont be there when he needs is. Can they purchase one there. Soooo Nervous about this, would appreciate any advice.
They wont be able to call home for atleast 2-3 weeks, sometimes longer. Then you will not hear from them until the final week where they call after they pass Battlestations to state that they are officially a Sailor. The calling cards are not necessary. Then once you go to graduation you should be able to give them there cell phone at the airport when they head to A school or if they stay in Great Lakes once they move from there recruit ships to there new ship on base.
So i dont need to send a calling card ? What does he use to call from, we dont have a land line only cells? I know i probably sound stupid, but just dont have a clue about this.
i believe their first couple im safe, im here calls are free to them and then after will need calling cards and yes then you wont here from him/her till weeks 3 or 4. im at that point now waiting but also depends on the type of job those needed security cleance will call for information from home those not wont and all depending on how well they work together is when they will be able to write or make a open call home or unless their sick and mind you this is all the information ive picked up reading all the blogs oe just asking.... be patient, i know its hard but here we do it together....by the way im pattieO my son is ship14,div344 USS ARIZONA.....in BC in GL.
My son uses a calling card from a bank of pay phones. I assume, if you're home he can call you collect. That will be expensive, so do send a calling cad for him to use! Nost kids do not know about calling collect because they have only ever used cell phones. That could be a hurdle for him. You will not get a call for several weeks unless your son needs some additional security clearance. In which case, you will be called from an administrative phone. This is unlikey unless your son is in some position requiring that special clearance. Most are not.
Try not to get stressed. Keep in mind what we keep saying here on N4M's "No news is good news!" If you hear nothing then everything is normal. The odd calls are usually the "oops, something is weird" calls. So relax, know that the Navy handles over 77,000 SR's in a year and your son will likely "sail" through with no worries!! This is hard but we can do it!
And do send him a calling card. He'll get it before you get his first letter.
I found a site that has free calling cards for our SR!! A friend of mine is the administrator... its callsforrecruits.org They give you 9 calling cards by email the calls only have 20 minutes on them and can only be used one time!
I sent my son a calling card about 2 weeks ago. He is starting into his 6th week & I have not gotten a call yet. Like they tell us -no news is good news. It is hard not hearing his voice. I sure do look forward to those letters each week. They really do develop a new appreciation for home.
Thank you all for the advice, i now can relax a little. I'm sure i'll be back with more questions. So glad i joined!!!!
You can send any sized envelope that does not require extra postage and he will not have to open the envelope in front of the RDC.
You can get calling cards (actually a number to call and several PIN) by going to http://callsforrecruits.org/ and emailing a request for some.
