I have been looking at the site and the comments for motels for graduation in July. One of them said the location was a bit scary- I don't want to spend a fortune and since I will have my youngest with me- I would like to have something with a pool- I would like to be closer to the base. Anyone have suggestions- where to stay or where not to stay! Thank you!
See the info in Saving Money PIR Weekend and PIR Day and Liberty during PIR Weekend (you're then Sailor will most likely fly out the day after PIR).
WE stayed at ramada waukegan, the rooms are ok,there is a pool, the resturant was good there and reasonable, they offer free shuttle to and from graduation.they have free continental breakfast, the service is good. it is approx 4 miles to base, took us about 20 mins d/t lines going back in base to drop my son off,if any one has military ID you can drive right on base, after you go thru gate.Cost was for 4 nights approx 75/night.they give you discount 2 queen beds.Mall is about 20 mins from there also.
Staying at the Courtyard Marriott. Told it was in a safe part of town. Like kelleenscot says in above post it has a great reputation. The shuttle to the graduation is only 3 dollars and its close to the Sarge's Meet and Greet, the night before graduation. Also there's a Starbucks, Walmart and other restaurants nearby. This made it a good choice for us. Hear they treat Navy parents well.
I stayed at :La Quinta. not the best, but we spent most of our time with my son. Great coffee in the am, I used 3 of us, round trip from LA with 4 nights and a rental car for about $800, I love Travelzoo and Orbitz, we used YELP to find reasonable GOOD food and be early to graduation we were up at 4 and waiting in line in the rental car at 5.
Last year when my son graduated, I stayed at the Navy Lodge. The cost was reasonable and we were provided with everything just like the Marriott or any other hotel. I stayed at the Navy Lodge recently in Ca. too that was also great and reasonably priced. Not sure if there was a pool though in either locations.
