What clothing is and isn't acceptable for PIR?

I was just wondering what clothing is and is not acceptable to wear at PIR. I specifically am asking about T-shirts. Is there anything that is totally a no-no? My husband and I have matching T-shirts that say NAVY(we are not in military) on them and wondered if they were acceptable to wear for PIR. Can anyone help? Thanks!

You will see everything from very casual to very dressy.  I usually suggest business casual or what you would wear to church because this is a formal ceremony and your Sailor will be in dress uniform (in your case most likely dress whites). No, your T's should not cause a problem and I'm sure you will not be the first to do that. If your T's had something offensive written on them that would be a different story.

You are so welcome.  Enjoy the journey.  A group you may find helpful, along with those you have already joined, is PIR Reference Information.

Also, do you know if it's okay to mail letters to them in Priority Mail envelopes? We are writing everyday and have lots of them to send when we get an address. Trying to plan ahead...It wasn't raining when Noah built the boat ya know. :)

She arrived March 20. Priority Mail is not UPS though. It is just another form of mail by United States Post Office but gets there in 2-3 days. Just thought I could get more letters in one of those envelopes than a regular envelope.

If you choose to send one of those envelopes, know that she WILL have to open it in front of the RDC. It is generally not a good idea to draw extra attention to your SR early on. You can generally send about 10 to 12 pages in a regular envelope (letter or business size or card) without having to add additional postage.

That's what I needed to know...I certainly do not want to add to her stress level at this point! Thanks so much!!!!

the sailors did not have dress whites when they graduated, my son graduated Mar. 19th, you have to walk quite a bit and stand and wait alot. I suggest wearing comfortable clothes and shoes. Graduation was amazing, our kids are so amazing my son went in a boy and in 8 weeks was a man. I missed him so much, only got a few phone calls, very brief, not enough time to say what I wanted to. Letters were great, but thought the 8 wks were never going to end. Stayed at the red roof inn, very close to base, and other things, Walmart and eateries very close. Hotel was clean very accomadating and very reasonable rates. You will enjoy graduation very much. My son has gone to A school and now can have his phone and computer, he has texted me every day since we left. Good luck to all, God speed to your soldiers.
