What is with the DEP program? I work with deppers all the time and they talk about what their learning at their DEP meetings (marching, standing, General Orders). To me, you really need to start with the basics, then work up from there.
What do I mean? Why don't they talk more about the Constitution in the "pre-service education" meeting. I mean, these sailors have sworn an oath to protect and defend it, and the Sailors Creed says we will support and defend it. I would be astonished if anyone in the DEP pool knew the contents of the U.S. Constitution. Am I even making sense?
It's sad our country doesn't teach it. I remember in grade school we really skimmed over it pretty briefly. Heck, why not relate any of the Bill of Rights to the core values? I'm really starting to wonder why it isn't even mentioned in the S.T.A.R.T. guide other than in the Sailors Creed. Yes, it's long, but have the Deppers choose which parts they would like to discuss and talk about. Get them involved.
It's totally sad our country has gotten to this point.

As parents we have to stop relying on any government entity to educate our children about what it means to be an American. Yes, they can (and should) study the Constitution, Bill of Rights, and understand the structure of our country in school, but if they don't hear the adults in their life talking about what's going on in the world they won't learn to care about it. Choosing to be in "service" to the United States of America is an honor and a sacrifice and I really hope these young people understand what they are doing.
I remember in 7th grade history, we had to learn the Preamble to the Constitution and in addition to that we had to break it down and be able to explain what each phrase actually meant. I still remember it to this day, some 32+ years later. I may not know the Constitution by heart, but I do know what it is about, and the basic meaning of the document. There are students today that have no clue what the Constitution is, let alone being able to tell what its purpose it.
