My son is now in "A" school and has been given the freedom to have a cell etc, etc, before I wrote him weekly because that was the only contact he could have. Now I see his posts on the internet and can call or talk more freely. My question is this: Does it encourage them to continue receiving letters? I have some problems with my hands and I know if I ask him my son will probably say no need to because of that. But I would gladly take the time to write him, regardless if it helps encourage him. I have noticed on his internet posts that he has had a few days of agitation and boredom in the evenings, will having mail to read help with that?

I miss those hand written letters from our sailor but between internet, cell phones and skype - those letters from boot camp are special keepsakes. I do send cards for events and encouragement and like to surprise him with care packages.

I appreciate everyone's comments to my question and want to thank you all. I did send him some requested items and stuck a package of something I know he likes to eat in it...I have been very busy now with moving twice!...first one didn't work out as planned but that is okay because I am better off where I am now, so haven't really had time to write him but we do keep in touch, I email or send him a text and he calls me back. That way he can talk at a convenient time. He is graduating from A school in a few weeks in the top 14%! so he got to pick where his next station is and that was nice.
JLS: they are definitely a product of different times, I remember when he was 9 and we went into a library that was selling off old records. He begged me to show him one so I picked one up and took it out of the cover...With wide eyes he said "Wow that's a big CD" LOL
Eagle Mom: I personally keep comments from family and friends sent via email in separate folders and if it is important like my girl's poems I print them out. We are definitely seeing a shift in how we keep track of our precious memories and the age of letter writing is taking a turn to something different. and just like our parents before us...those that lived in the non-tech society will miss some of it.
Thanks to all for your comments

Congratulations on your son completing boot camp and becoming a Sailor!
When my son was there the address changed but he said it was one central address to cover the whole area....but he may have been referring to those on that section that weren't not in boot camp since they keep them separate in most cases. He may not have had info to give yet. Not all of them transfer over the same day they graduate. I am sure he will be in touch with you soon and let you know. He is a sailor now so I don't believe you put the SA on there any more. It took my son about a week to get everything settled so look to hear from him somewhere in that time.
"A" school is different from boot camp, they have different guidelines and rules, I am sure he will do fine and thank him for serving our country for me please.
