I don't mean this to be a downer discussion, but I am a realist and a planner. What happens if my SR daughter does not pass BS? Is that an automatic separation or would she be allowed another chance to pass it and PIR delayed? With her PIR on a Wednesday (July 3), when would BS be done and we would get our "I'm a sailor call" or a call saying she didn't pass it? Our plan is to fly in July 2, and I've been told some BS may not bet done until the day before PIR and some couldn't cancel hotels and flights when their SR didn't pass.

I expect my son to pass, just like I expected him to graduate high school and get a job. I bought my plane tix, hotel and rental all with the extra insurance. The hotel I'd be out about 225. If that even happened, I'd tell my son he owed me that money. He would know this. This is just how our dynamic is, and he knows what is expected of him. He is a little older than some, not right out of HS. He has done the job thing and struggled. I let him struggle so he knows what it is like. I believe in him and expect BC to be a good challenge.

Thank you, that really helps. Question then... are the standards for the final PFT different/harder than the first two they go through? I'm just thinking that if a SR can pass the first two, what keeps them from passing the final one- fatigue, stress, injury? Iv'e heard of this happening, too. Well, whatever happens, I keep in my head that this is my daughter's journey and experience, not mine. I have faith in her that she can do this, but whatever happens, I will be just as proud of her as I always have. ;-)

I agree! thanks!

It is not uncommon for about 10% to 19% of the recruits to fail BS. Don't let that concern you. Many of those fail because they fall asleep, believe it or not. They are given instruction on correcting what caused the failure and are allowed to retake BS. They are not immediately separated,

Can't tell you the exact date of BS, and the division your daughter is in will also play a part in the approx date. I can tell you, with my best guess, since the July 3rd TG only has 7 division BS will be done done for them in just a couple overnights. They may start running BS on the Thursday the week before PIR, with the last group in the TG finishing on Monday morning.

BST-21 is a Team exercise, it is all about helping each other out and being a team player, They must stay awake as this is a 12 hour ordeal. no closing of the eyes or that can fail them. if interested on You tube type in BST-21 and it will show you the extent of this exercise and what all they will do. Very interesting. Also they must stay awake after this is done. They will be allowed to get to bed by 8.

My son told us that his division had a SR that had been set back added to their group the weekend before they did BS so he could go through it with them. As my son explained it, if you don't pass the last PT you're usually set back a week since you can't do BS until you pass it. If you fail BS you can be set back two weeks for rest and additional training. Basically, if the SR makes it to week six they're going to be a sailor. It's just a matter of when.
