I visited my sailor in Norfolk a few years ago. Can't tell you much about it. He was living in an apartment complex the Navy has rental agreement with, so most,if not all, residents were Navy. Two bedroom two bath, with locked door to each b and b. Shared kitchen, living room and patio. Before that base housing with 4 sailors per living space.
Most need cars to get to base if living off base, and can be long bike ride/ walk to duty station even if living on base.
Norfolk has a nice city waterfront.
We took road trip to DC and camped in Shenandoah National Park. Went through Luray Caverns. Nice if your sailor has some leave time.
It snows in Norfolk at times and there are hurricane watch/ warnings at least once a year.
Sorry, can't give you any more information

Hi Valerie! This is a late response, I'm am rarely on much these days.

My son has been station on the IKE since 2018. I will say at first he didn't like Norfolk much because he got there in the winter. It gets really cold & he's a Texas boy! He even went to a tanning bed because the sun didn't shine for 2-3 weeks. Lol! Once he figured out how to live where it's cold things got better. I also found a sweet couple that ministers to the sailors in Virginia Beach. They open their home on Saturday & Sunday, feed them wonderful meals, plays cards/board games etc...they are the biggest blessing to my son. The ship life gets old and being able to go to a home away from home was a game changer. The sailors will end up blowing all their money on hotels on weekends. Also eating out so much!! You can get a base apartment, however there is a long waiting list! Search John & Yvonne Wagner on this site, that is the sweet couple I am speaking of....

My son ended up getting an apartment off base with another sailor in his division, which he really liked. This actually saved money, he started cooking more at home and no more hotel stays.  However, the traffic is horrific in the mornings. He got up really early to avoid being late to work. One thing I will say is tell your kid to be watchful of theft at laundry mats both on & off ship. On ship you must lock up EVERYTHING!!! Sad, but true!

Virginia Beach is fun in the summer and Virginia is a beautiful state. Lot's of outdoor type things to do. Good luck! By the way, is your son in Aviation?
