Oops... Meant to say Guys, not Gays.....
"Not that there is anything wrong with that" (From the TV show Seinfeld)...
CRF - My nephew is in San Diego and when not deployed he lives is what he calls a barracks, I call it a hotel. The building has a swimming pool on top, and they can have guest stay for up to 14 days. Gals and Gays, intermix on the floors. To me, it's almost like a college dorm or an apartment. These sailors are treated as adults, which they should be.
Per the POA. I have a general POA for my son and daughter, but I have seen before that the parents might sell off all their sailors items just to have money. I've had parents that were crack addict, and prostitutes. We are a reflection of our society, maybe this is why some young men or women decided to join the Navy, to get away from that stuff. So, when in doubt, the sailor should protect themselves and only give a special POA, if they have any doubts.
NavyMom - Are you saying your son want to go through the "Seaman to Admiral" program (STA-21)? or does he already have a degree and wants to get a direct commission?
Here is some info on the STA-21 program:
CRF230dad: When My son went from P'Cola to the USS Lake Champlain- he was on a barracks ship .... not on the actual ship he was assigned to. But his ship is in port getting alot of work done on it - almost a year now he has been assigned to this ship while it is getting battle ready - going out on aways and testing testing testing. But while it was not in commission, he was on a barracks ship- which hold sailors with many many beds on them.... but now that his ship is almost done, he has a rack on his ship.
My Sailor is thinking of going into the enlisted to officers .. does anyone know what that takes - does he sign up for that when he reinlists for his next 4 years? Or do you do that while serving on your ship/shore duty??
I do agree on the limited access. My only concern is when he deploys in the event something happened (God forbid).
Craig, Since my son got orders and is now attached to the boat does that mean he will be living on the ship when he arrives or will be assigned to barracks? Does it depend on the ships status, in port or deployed?
CRF - I posted all the POA here:
http://www.navydep.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=214
The best bet is have him go to base legal and get a special POA for you to do that. I always recommend sailors stay away from the general POA's because it gives too much access. They have got to learn not to give too much access, even if you're his parent. It's just not a wise habit to get into.
Thanks Craig, Do you know where I can find the POA form on-line? I forgot to ask him about RAP duty.
CRF - He didn't put in for RAP duty?
