Does anyone know if they actually get to make any phone calls from BC?  We know they will write letters.  The other question would be if they do call, how does that work?  Do they need a calling card or something?  We only have cell phones and not a landline at home. Any advice?

Your recruit will make the "I'm here!" call upon arrival at the RTC from his cell phone not long before he puts it in "the box" and sends it home along with his clothes and other things that he took to the RTC and cannot keep.

Yes, he is able to call cell phones. Make sure that he has the numbers of those he will want to call while at the RTC since there will be times when he will be able to call more than one person. Write the names and numbers on an index card or other small paper and put them in his wallet and tell him to put his wallet in his "Valuables Sock" before packing "the box." See Things to Do in the Last Month Before Your Future Sailor Leaves for... and See Arrival and What Happens at the RTC.

Yes, he needs a phone card to make calls from the RTC for calls that the RDC schedules at the phone banks. He can take a phone card with him or buy one at the NEX.

He will make an "I'm still alive!" call in about 2 to 3 calendar weeks after arrival. Lately those calls have been coming on either the third Saturday (calls can be between 8 am and 8 pm Central Time) or the third Sunday (calls can be 1 pm to 8 pm) after arrival or early in the week (calls can be 8 am to noon) soon after that. He may make other calls or he may not make another call until the "I'm a Sailor! call in the week before PIR (calls begin 2ish pm and go through 8 pm).

Calls are totally up to the RDC. Don't expect a call, but have your phone available between 8 am and 8 pm on Saturday and between 1 pm and 8 pm on Fridays and Sundays and in the morning on weekdays. Calls at other times are possible, but would indicate a problem or a need for information. See Phone Cards and Phone Calls.

My oldest son called me the night he arrived at boot camp.  It was about a 5-minute call.  He was fine.  About three weeks in, I received another call from him and talked for about 45 minutes.  It was great.  He also, called again a couple of weeks after that.  Make sure you answer your phone no matter what number is calling, it could be your sailor.
