nics, lucky you! I love it out in SD and will be visiting very often with 2 sailors out there.
Happy Thanksgiving to you all! Enjoy your sailors if you are fortunate enough to have them home and to those of us who don't hopefully we can have a good thanksgiving conversation with our sailors on the phone! Happy eating, but don't indulge too much. I went to the gym this AM (entirely TOO early I might add) and one of the trainers there told us that the average weight gain over Thanksgiving weekend is 5 to 15 lbs!!!!!!!! That is hard to believe, but then again the food is awesome and there is a lot of it! I did an extra 15 mins. on the elliptical after that comment!

Thanks ladies :)
I live in California and I hear cv will be moving to San Diego so can't wait to take a glimpse of the ship :)

navywife, you are right about touring the ship until they get to Norfolk.
nics, Sea trials are actually a trial run before deployments. There are usually a few and they are anywhere in length from a few days to weeks. The rest we can't give because we can't discuss dates here. You will have to ask you sailor those questions. He will know soon enough if he doesn't already!

I was told there isnt a tour or visiting the ship until they are at Norfolk. And we see the ship when i drop him off through the alley :) So i guess we kind of cheat....but if you take a drive along the piers in norfolk youll see the size..its breathtaking makes me proud to be part of such an amazing thing.

All this talk about the ship being enormous..does this mean I could see and visit the ship as well??

Also does anyone know what year thecarl Vinson will be going on it's tour??

Lol, they have always looked enormous to me but the first time we drove th emoving truck full of our stuff to drop him i about died, it was soooo massive eeps! Thank you for the kindess, its my lucky really..we've only been moved her since august 17th..and my husbands been here for just about 3 years, so of course we would get our world rocked by something bad. We dont put ourselves out there and have enough trouble asking for help..i was just so dissapointed thatit would happen on a day when people from his ship werent goint to it..of course it would be the day they are all over by where we live at the convention center lol.

Petty Officer Stoelton,
I don't want to turn this ship /boat thing into an argument but I did want to clarify so there is no confusion. I was in the Navy for 8 years but it was 5 years ago that I got out so I e-mailed my husband who is on the Nimitz right now and will be going to the CV next year. My husband has been on ship's continuously (except for a 9 month IA tour in Afghanistan last year) since 1996 so he knows his ships pretty well. The Navy as you know is steeped in tradition, and even though the submarines are officially listed as ships the tradition of calling submarines a boat still remains. The SEL of the Sub is called the Chief of the Boat. Another tradition that a few people have had trouble letting go of is the Captains Gig or the Admirals Barge. Several ships still have a Captains gig and some of the big decks still have an Admirals Barge. Many ships are leaving them behind when they go out because of space and also because they have to have several sailors assigned to maintain the boats and those sailors can be more productive elsewhere. Also traditionally whatever boat the Captain is assigned to on the Watch, Quarter and Station Bill is called the Captain's Gig even if it is just one of the RHIB's. I hope that clears things up a little. The Navy loves tradition so sometimes it takes a while for new ideas to catch on.
