Hi Paige. I hope you had a wonderful Christmas and New Year as well. In a way I'm thankful it went by so quickly so I didn't have much time to ponder about our first holidays without our son. First experiences are always tough. But time heals and we will get accustom to our son's new life, career, adventures and traditions.

I receive emails from the Howard's Ombudsman. Here is her information:

Eileen Newell
USS HOWARD DDG 83
Command Ombudsman
(619) 341-0103
You might ask her to add your email address to her list. I think it was my son that put my email address on a list prior to deployment.
Thank goodness for technology! My son has been able to email every few days or FB me to keep in touch. He said Guam was very expensive. I haven't heard from him in a while which means he's been really busy out there in the middle of the pond.
I have yet to send him a couple of boxes of gifts and goodies. My husband picked up some customs forms which are really small. I'm leaving work early today to get more information on how to send the flat rate box to the ship.
Well, since you're making the jerky, I'll see about making some home-made almond roca ship that out next week and share with your son too! :)

The holiday season is upon us and I wish each of you and your families a wonderful Christmas and New Year. May God's light shine upon our Sailors and keep them safe this holiday season.

Happy Holidays Everyone!

Welcome to the group nicolejohnsmom!

Hi Paige, Hope all is well with you. It's funny how things kind of go back to normal after they deploy. The only thing missing from my sailor are the texts and phone calls. He has been able to send emails every few days and that's good enough for now. He also made a phone call while we were tree shopping last week. :)

My son is a GM - Gunners Mate. His division is CM and he works with the VLS - Vertical Launching System. I started collecting bits and pieces to put together in a scrap book. Found some of his certificates he received right before deployment so I'll be able to use those as well.

Thanks again for all your helpful ideas, comments and support!

Wishing you and your family a Happy Holiday Season!

Nanette

Hi Paige,

Thank you for providing the links to the news articles on today's deployment. With this being our first deployment experience, I see what you mean about your son running around crazy. My poor son had duty yesterday and we were still boxing up his apartment and truck this morning!

Well, they're finally on their way. I love your idea of the scrap book. I started one when he was at Boot Camp. It was more like a journal - too small - so I'll need to get a real scrap book.

Sounds like your jerky is a big hit with the crew. My daughter and I are already gathering things to send. I heard packages can take anywhere from 2 to 6 weeks.

Warmest Regards,

Nanette

Hi Paige ~ My son recently informed me that the Howard's Ombudsman has changed (about two weeks ago) which is probably the reason why there hasn't been any issues of the Dragon Times after July. Somehow I was on an email list that Terra, the former Ombudsman, had during those last four months. I sent a couple of emails to Terra regarding the newsletters after July but had not received any reply. My son says that the new Ombudsman seems like they will be just as informative, if not more. Hopefully the newsletters will start up again now with their deployment coming up.

I can post a link to the newsletters once I receive them, and any other bit of information to share with the group. This will be our first deployment experience. Will you be in San Diego to see the ship off?

Good morning. Happy Halloween!

I received these issues of the Dragon Times newsletter for the USS Howard. Has anyone else received any other issues besides these that they could share?
