November 8, 2010, I was privileged to go on my third Honor Flight out of the Davenport, IA/Moline, IL area. The weekend before the Davenport Legion hosted a brunch for us "guardians" to meet our WWII veterans we'd be accompanying. I was assigned three veterans--delightful men who were excited to go (they're all excited!). I also was asked to be a bus captain--just a field trip with older kids!

On Sunday night, Hy-Vee grocery stores hosted a dinner for all of us. Hy-Vee sponsored this flight--they had a professional photographer there to take each veterans picture that was given to them at the end of the trip the next day. Hy-Vee also gave the veterans disposable Kodak cameras on the trip and will develop the pictures for free. We each got a special t-shirt and a jacket to wear and keep. At the dinner, employees volunteered to serve the dinner on their time. Many employees came to the airport for the send off and welcome, too. I can't say enough about how wonderful Hy-Vee was for the entire event!

Our day started early with arrival at the airport at 5am. The veterans were supposed to arrive at 5:30, but we always have some who show up at 4:30! They don't want to miss anything! Our TSA here is outstanding! They are respectful, helpful, and kind even though we have to go through exactly the same security checks as any passenger. They help putting shoes back on, make sure no one forgets a belt. On the other side of security, the Salvation Army was there with coffee and donuts for the troops before we boarded the plane.

I am always amazed that it can take an entire day to fly to Washington, DC, from here, but the Honor Flight takes an hour and a half! And we were fed again on the plane! Once in DC, our first stop was THEIR memorial, the WWII Memorial. On the way from the airport, we watched the DVD about the memorial which you can order at www.honorflight.org. All purchases are tax deductible.

It's a beautiful memorial! There are 56 pillars for all the states and territories involved in WWII. They are tied together with a bronze rope. Two pavilions respresent the Atlantic and Pacific theaters of war. 4048 stars represent all who were lost in the war--each star represents 100 US troops who died.

We had a brief bus tour of the mall to see the Capitol and White House, Smithsonian buildings, and the Navy Memorial. Too bad we didn't get to stop there. Our next stops were the Air Force Memorial near the Pentagon, the Marine Memorial (commonly called the Iwo Jima memorial), the Women's Military Memorial, the Changing of the Guard at Arlington, Korean War Memorial, Vietnam Wall, and Lincoln Memorial.

It was a full day! And two Arby's box lunches on the buses. We had three buses, 155 people, about 90 WWII veterans and 60 guardians. If the veteran uses a cane, he used a wheelchair for the day. My three veterans all were able to walk on their own; that's why I had three instead of one veteran.

About 7pm we were back at the airport and on the plane--to be fed again! On arrival in Moline, the owners of Whitey's ice cream had dishes of Sgt. Camo for each of us. Then we organized our parade to the waiting crowd outside security--a bagpiper, Patriot Guard Riders, Legion and Auxiliary members, VFW, Boy Scouts, school kids, family and friends all cheered and clapped as we made our way to them.

If you go to facebook and search for Ruth Clayton-Davis, you can see pictures from Honor Flights I've been on--Nov. 2008 with my dad, April 2009, and Nov 2010. If you want more, search for Annette Wood who has lots of pictures from Honor Flights and PGR events. If you have trouble, message me or friend me and I'll make sure you can see them.

I left out that my sailor son took leave to be a guardian on this flight! He accompanied a woman who was a Navy veteran.

How wonderful that he got to go! We hear stories like that all the time--we have to get them there asap! Our list in the Quad-Cities is down to about 200 so we're looking for more veterans. The April flights will take care of those 200, but there's money enough for more to go. Bless you and God bless your veteran hero dad!

This is probably my favorite picture of my dad at the memorial.
