okay, this is a teaser and this is how it worked in 2008:

sailor will get you information about 2 months prior.

you will have to fill out a medical information sheet.

who can go:  parents and children of the sailor.  Then their siblings, extended family and even friends if there is room.  number?  don't know

spouse:  navy doesn't want relations on the ship.  it is still a functional ship 24/7.  No distractions of that sort.

cost:  $105, paid to the ship, to help defray the cost of food and for the souveniors-which are wonderful.  Your cost to fly to Hawaii or whatever port you'd get on.  Any expenses while there.  No need for money on the ship, unless you want to buy something in the store.  It's a pretty ordinary store, but I did get a Lincoln shirt there.

where to board:  we boarded in Hawaii

where do you sleep:  no, there aren't guest quarters (I asked).  you sleep in the berthings or where your sailor does if same sex.

how is that possible:  sailors leave the ship in Hawaii for leave or to go back ahead of the squadron.

details as I have time.  And the picture is my famous one!  haha.  Yes, I was asleep in the ready room.  My husband took this one, but I fell asleep another time, woke up to an officer taking my photo.  I asked if was going to be a dart board back in VA.  They laughed their heads off.

We drove to SD from AZ, flew to Hawaii from San Diego (SD), took the ship back to SD and then drove home.

We were on the ship 6 nights and 7 days. do it.
Thanks so much for the info...I think this sounds awesome!!!
Sue, I have an odd question about the timing of the cruise. Since my husband and I would have to fly to Hawaii from TN, we would need to plan our flight and time off from work as close to the ship's arrival in Hawaii as possible. Do you know how much prior notice would we get of ship's exact arrival date into Hawaii? (I hope that makes sense-lol.)
actually, I can sort of answer that. We got our TC packet in early July with TC scheduled for late Sept/early Oct. As it got closer, the dates became clearer. We had to book our flights, so went with the date of 10-1. When we booked we thought the ship was pulling in on the 1st. It actually arrived on the 30th. So we spent 1 night and day in Hawaii itself and slept on the ship on the 2nd. Pulled out on the 3rd.

Everyone has to be on board the night before it pulls out. Many tigers flew in on the 2nd. The USO was command central and they took good care of us. The ship had shuttles runnning back and forth from the airport to the ship.

The night before we left., we took a shuttle over the NEX on the base in Pearl Harbor! It was huge and beautiful. Make sure your sailor takes you!
Great info, Sue!
While I have not done this myself (this deployment is our Sailor's first), I have Navy Mom friends who were all set to go on their Sailor's Tiger Cruise, only to have it cancelled or dates shifted. So be aware that this may happen - this is the Navy, after all.
My nephew was on the Boxer last year and their TC was cancelled due to a flu outbreak on their way home. There were a LOT of unhappy Tigers! And the Navy does NOT compensate you for that in any way, shape or form.
So, always a slight risk - it may be prudent to have refundable tickets?
yes refundable are good way to go. BUT they cost double of what a regular ticket did. Remember it's a 1 way ticket.

The navy recommends you get that kind. We did the math and decided to risk it.
good point!
Hello, my eldest son is going to do the TC with his younger brother that is on the Lincoln. My eldest served in the Navy as well in 2000, but not on a ship and I felt he would get more out of this experience than I could. My question from reading all your posts, we try to get them to Hawaii as close as possible to ships arrival? That way we arent dealing with hotels and rental cars? I read something about shuttles? So really shouldnt need rental cars? We like everyone else is concerned about cost, especially in Hawaii. I will keep watching this thread as time gets closer.
