Im a 24 yr old married mother of 2 and yes my husband is very supportive. I'm currently interested in enlisting in the Navy. However, I have tons of questions and can't seem to get straight forward answers from a recruiter! I did graduate from an accredited school for Medical Assisting and took some AP classes in H.S. Will the schooling I have give me an advantage wen trying to become a HM? Also my ultimate goal is to b a doctor? What would be the best route to take to achieve my ultimate goal?

Thats well put Erin and I do understand  but even though he did take a vow he also can break it without being court martialed!!!! So there is abit of a difference! Thats the aspect I'm looking at it from. I'm a young woman that will have two children to worry about. So if halfway through my enlistment contract, things go bad and we decide to separtate, divorce, or whatever, I can be somewhat prepared. I'm not saying that I think this is whats going to happen. However, I am very much so a realist. I realize people feelings change at different points in their lives. So to a certain extent the only person one can be accountable for is themselves. He and I will forever be intertwined but that doesn't mean he has to stay in the physical. He may come to realize, just as others have, that military life is not for him and I could fall absolutely in love with it. Or heck I could realize it's not for me too  but I have to stay until my MSO is up! Bottom line... Legally he can leave, I can't!!!

i was born and raised navy, joined navy, married navy, and am now retired navy wife.  it has given me many rich experiences and a lot of security.

i will post more later, i'm using one hand to type...in the hosp.  Will be happy to go over a lifetime of pros and cons when i can communicate better.

Yes Ma'am. Thank in advance Anti M.... I saw that exact statement in another one one your post in a different discussion and I definitely planned on contacting you. Hope you get well soon!

Deternation - Just curious, are you blonde?

The reason I ask is I told you how to look up the different ratings and see what those jobs are all about.  I suggest you choose at least 5 ratings that you think you would like to do.  If you can choose 10, that would be even better.  It doesn't matter what your ASVAB scores are, because if there isn't a billet (job position), then you won't get it anyways.  They just don't make positions for people.  The DPEP is about the only exception.  They fill the quotas they have.  If the Navy is full in the HM rating then you won't get it.  So you need to find the next suitable rating you would like.  So many people will go to MEPS thinking they will get a rating say IT, only to find out the IT field is full.  They don't even think about the other ratings the Navy has, so it left up to the classifier to figure out what is a good choice.  Now if I was a classifier and I needed someone for some crappie job, then I would choose the one that hasn't a clue about what they want to do.  However, if you had a list of 10 ratings (jobs) that would work for you, then they will look down the computer screen and tell you which ones are available...

What you never want to be is "Job locked".  They will just show you the door.  They have so many others that want to come in that they don't need someone that only wants one job (not saying you are job locked, just saying that is what happens to people that are).  If you want one job, then go to the civilian world and find that special position.

Per the ASVAB, frankly nowadays you might be able to take it and be able to leave MEPS without a rating.  The reason I say this is many people become QNJ'd (qualified, no jobs).  Yea, they could have scored a 99 on the ASVAB, but if there are no jobs available then they will just send you home.  Blame that on our sucky economy.  So, once again start searching for the acceptable jobs you want, then write them down.  If it were me going to MEPS, I would not want to commit to some rating (job) for 4 to 6 years that I think would suck. I'd rather remain a civilian.  I for one would not want to be Snipe.  Geez, I like fresh air and  not getting nose bleeds when leaving the ship... (Angie, I know your a ex-snipe so I'm funnin' you ~ha)....

Snipes are never ex-snipes :}~~~  I will ALWAYS be a snipe.  Switched to NC to help my fellow Snipes out even more :~}  I am soo stealing that pic.

NO I AM NOT BLONDE... and yes I'm yelling this time!! lol  :-)

Craig I know that you gave me the website , and I did look, but if at all possible I would like more than just the text book definition of a rating because there are questions that I'd have about any job that I'd take that the sites dont give. That is why I asked about taking the asvab before MEPS.. maybe you just didnt catch that part!! I didn't ask because I'm dingy or cant follow instructions. I like to have as much information as possible before I make a decision that could be sooo life changing! Reading about ALL of the various ratings and not even having a clue as to what I would qualify for is very overwhelming. Plus because I'm so open it also makes it hard to narrow things down. That's why I was hoping to take the asvab before MEPS so I'd at least have a general idea of the jobs I should be looking at! Like I said I AM VERY open-minded to trying something new if I have to.... just want to really know and be prepared for what ever that new thing is. What I dont want to do is go into a situation so drastic as this without being informed. I could possibly only be setting myself up for failure! I say this because if I go in thinking or being informed that it is one way and its the total opposite it could very well affect my motivation. That's exactly something a dingy blonde would do.... Get involved with something like the"Navy" and be blind, uninformed, and dumb as a bag of rocks!!!

And this may sound dumb to you too but Idont know very much about military lingo so I'd better ask anyway.....are "snipes" snipers?

Thanks Lady Hamilton... I'll family definitely look!

Angie - Being a NC, do you notice the mistake on that picture?

That is one cool picture..funny too!!

no, but I am sure as soon as you say it I will go "duhhh"  LOL!

I do want to say is should read, they instead of we.

It's missing the IC rating.

Determination - Just for practice, lets say you go to MEPS and somehow they allow you to take the ASVAB.  They print out your scores (let use the below as an example).  Since you can't waste the classifiers time, you must figure this out on your own...So:

1. What ratings would you be qualified for?

2. What rating would you qualify for if the GT remains 117, but the HM is not 177 but happens to be 205?

3. What if your AFQT is 47 instead of 80?

The above (#1, 2, and 3) are all different senerio's.  That aren't all at once.  I just want to see if you can actually figure this out.  If you can, then I would tell the recruiter you would like to take the ASVAB because you're totally aware on how to figure out the ratings eligible, if you can't, then you need to do what 99% of the what the other future sailor do and take the test and then talk to the classifier.    My thought is you're thinking it's easy to figure out ratings, it's not....
