Higgins Namesake: COLONEL WILLIAM R. HIGGINS, USMC

Colonel William R. (Rich) Higgins, USMC, disappeared on Feb. 17, 1988, while serving as the Chief, Observer Group Lebanon and Senior Military Observer, United States Military Observer Group,
United Nations Truce Supervision Organization. After being held captive by pro-Iranian terrorists in Lebanon, Col. Higgins was murdered. The exact date of death is uncertain; however, he was declared dead on Jul. 6, 1990. His remains were eventually recovered and interred at Quantico National Cemetery Dec. 30, 1991.

Our May adoption for June is the USS Higgins.  Thanks everyone for all the wonderful ideas for this month's adoptees...keep them coming!  We love all your creative feedback! The USS Higgins will be looking forward to a steel beach party about the time our packages arrive.
One of the things the ship is doing is linking with an elementary school in San Diego.  The school’s mascot is a dolphin and the Chaplain's wife bought a dolphin at Sea World for the Chaplain to take along on the ship.  He takes pictures of the dolphin ("SOLANA") doing various jobs around the ship.  Then they send the pictures to the school.  They have a bulletin board at the school that they post news from the dolphin on...  the school kids are writing to the ship.  So a “summertime fun with a water theme" would fit in great.  We could even send photos from everyone (with a dolphin in the picture) back to the ship with our packages saying "Hi" back from us Molly Moms and supporters...LOL...reminds me of the Christmas "fruitcake" adventure!

Our “We Stitch Love” group will be there every stitch of the way…LOL…no pun intended.  We will need 276+ pillowcases for this month.

I love the dolphin! When we did the Seabee group they had Paul the sheep. I looked online for things of June and it came back with Flag Day and also Father's Day. It is the beginning of summer also. Maybe flags from all the states? A celebration for all the Father's away from their kids and those who are away from their fathers? It's also smack dab in the middle of baseball season also. The birthstone for June is the Pearl. Maybe we could send 'Pearls of Wisdom'. Summertime is also, water balloons, water guns and slip n slides :)   My kids used to play sheet volleyball, dodgeball and baseball with water balloons. They had so much fun! I don't know if that would work considering they would have to do something with all of the pieces of broken balloons.

Thank you for adding the history of the ship! I love their motto!

Hmmmm, I like the water fun theme. So how about water fun in each state? Dolphins somehow in the photo's of course. I like the Pearls of wisdom. But the have to be mother's wisdom. like, you keep making that face and it will freeze like that. silly ones. have to see what water fabric I have. time to start sewing in full gear again.

Thanks Kim and Nancy!  So let's see...dolphins (fun dolphin things for summer), fathers day (cards & letters), flags, pearls (oysters ?), baseball (think we could find baseball water balloons?), summertime water fun...hmmm...there's all kinds of fun things with these ideas.  I love the idea of tying in a summertime item with a flag from every state.  Shoots here in FL I can get FL on almost everything for summer...LOL...harder to find something without it!  If everyone else is game for a summer item with each state on it...I say let's go for it.

Let's give the moms a chance to see the announcement and share some ideas...we've got a good idea where we're going.  It's going to be fun!

remember the Oregon Ducks football sent 300 shirts for the BCS bowl game ?   WELL they wrote to us about a week ago and they want to send MORE STUFF ---but she was a little secret on what UNTIL this weekend and look at this -------------HOOYAH the Higgans are going to get some AWESOME LOVE from the University of Oregon !!!

Dolphins, huh?   Hm.  A trip to Marineland may be in order for me.  I already have a couple of awesome photos from my last visit that I could contribute.  For those unfamiliar with Marineland, it was the original "dolphin experience" before Sea World and all those other copycats.    http://www.marineland.net/

I love all the ideas already posted.  Flag Day, Father's Day and the beginning of summer were the first things that came to my mind with June.

Kim, you are so clever to link the birthstone, pearl, into this!!

I can't wait to contact the local quilt shop about who are adoptees are.  I was in to see her just last week & the woman who would be leading the sewing was there.  They were still trying to pick a date.  (They move so slowly!)  Hopefully this will light the fire under them.  My hubby is taking a look at my sewing machine, hopefully it will still work.  It was at my parents' home for a number of years - no time to sew before now.  And, now I have time and a purpose to get it out again.
