My son is at Dam Neck, VA and sent me an email wanting his laptop sent. Can anyone tell me the best way to send it? He did comment that it did not need to be sent next day. Good :-)  Does anyone have an estimate of what it will cost? (I realize it depends on size and weight, but just looking for an estimate). Thanks!

when did your son arrive at dam neck?

He arrived this past Saturday (5/12) ... he said he knew some guys from his brother division (148) who were going to Dam Neck, which is probably your fiance's division. Eric was in division 147.

Jeanne,

Put it whatever box you can find for it. Unless it is a notebook or tablet it likely will not fit in the military box (the cheapest way to ship to them) but any box will work. If the box is too big, I'm sure he will not mind if you throw in a couple of pairs of his favorite jeans and a couple of tees for weekend and evening wear. He might not be able to wear them this week but he will be able to very soon. Cost is dependent on the size of the box and the dollar value you place on the contents. Chris only has had a couple of things damaged in all his shipments so if you feel pretty secure about it, insure it for a low amount. If you or he cannot afford to replace it and feel he cannot afford to be without it then insure it for what it would cost to replace. Even if you only insure the contents for $1.00 always insure the boxes. Any documents or important records that need to be sent to him, be sure to send certified. There is always confusion there as to insured and certified. The difference is one is used for packages while the other is used for paper mail. Hope this helps stir the muddy waters!

A good option for shipping is to order from the postal service website the free military pack. You will have delievered to your door: several priority mail boxes, one or two rolls of priority mail tape, labels, documents for addresses and contents declarations (good for both stateside and international mailing) and sleeves to put the documents in. My PO here is wonderful to help me the first time or two I send to a new address or ship. Some of the folks there are former military themselves and know the ropes pretty good. Don't be afraid to ask.

USPS has a priority flat rate box for larger flat items. You can ask for it at the post office. One price like the square boxes they offer regardless of the weight. Add plently of cushioning, clothes and such for padding work well since he will be able to wear his favorite jeans soon as he classes up.

Thanks Mary and JM-ISmomx2 for the info. I didn't know about the free military boxes, so I will probably order them. I am sure I will be sending things periodically.
